All-Seeing Eye: The History of Video Surveillance

There are eyes everywhere, and non-humans. At present, the accelerated modern world, surveillance video has become as essential to society as security guards and gateways. Mention video surveillance and the average Joe instantly associate the word with video cameras mounted in banks and department stores or videotapes of an errant spouse marked as Exhibit A in a messy divorce proceeding.

The history of video surveillance is as complex as the system behind it. In fact, goes back much further in time than most of us realize. Reports press indicate that by 1965, U.S. police have been using video surveillance in public places. In 1969, the police had cameras been mounted in strategic areas of New York City Municipal Building. That would set a strong precedent, and it was not long before the practice spread to other cities and police officers were closely monitoring key areas, with the use of CCTV or closed circuit television systems.

Devices Beginnings
The video cassette tapes are largely responsible for popularizing the video surveillance. Analogue technology used in recording tape video gave decision makers an innovative idea: it is possible to preserve the evidence on tape.

In 1975, England installed video surveillance systems in four of its major subway stations. At the same time, also began monitoring traffic flow on major roads. The United States made the same during the 1980s, and although he had not been as rapid as England in the use of video surveillance, which made up for lost time by far the institution to video surveillance in public areas.

Digital Multiplexing and subsequent events
One drawback of analogue technology is that users had to change tapes daily. This was resolved during the 1990s, with the introduction of digital multiplexing. Digital multiplexer units had features like time lapse and motion-only recording, which saves a lot of tape space. Moreover, it allowed the simultaneous recordings into several chambers.

The next step, digitization, compression outstanding capacity and low cost, allowing users to record a monthly value surveillance videos on your hard disk. In addition, digitally recorded images are clearer and allow manipulation of images to improve clarity.

9 / 11 and Internet
The events of 11 September 2001 changed public perception of video surveillance. Software developers create programs to enhance video surveillance. The facial recognition software is one of these programs. Use of the key points of the facial features, faces was recorded compared with photographs of terrorists and criminals.

In May 2002, facial recognition software has been installed in the chambers video surveillance computer at Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. That same year, SmartGate was installed in the Sydney International Airport in Australia. SmartGate is an automated border crossing system for air crew members. The system scans the faces of crew members, compared to passport photos, and confirms the identity in less than ten seconds.

In December 2003, Royal Palm Middle School in Phoenix, Arizona installed face recognition video surveillance. This is a pilot program for sex offender registration and tracking of missing children.

For all these events, the Internet is the cherry on top. He revolutionized video surveillance by removing all impediments for display and control anywhere in the world.

Clearly, humanity has created better and more refined means for video surveillance. Surveillance systems smaller, smarter and more powerful video come on the market for almost all months. Satellites bouncing signals around the world. There are, indeed, eyes everywhere, and several of them are in heaven.

Someone is always watching.

Two Parts Defective; Low Quality; Other Cons, but Cheap Price

by christinemm – The Thinking Mother from Connecticut, United States on 2010-07-07
Before I delve into the numerous issues I have with this product, the price is low and installation is easy. However, if the product is defective or can’t do the job, I can’t see how it could be rated higher than 1 star!

Cons:

My unit was defective in two ways.

1. First defect, the area where the AC adaptor plugs into didn’t work consistently. While not being touched, the unit would alternately lose power then turn back on, or just stay off. One night while attempting an overnight surveillance with motion-detector record, it shut off shortly after being set up. I had checked the connections and made sure it was on a stable surface. My husband inspected it and feels the jack is loose or that it is not making the connection inside the unit (it’s not a defect in the wire cord). I worry of the quality of this product or the consistency of the product’s manufacture. Perhaps the low price for this unit is a signal for low quality construction and is unreliable. Even at this low price if it doesn’t work or is unreliable, what good is it?

2. The second defect was the digital memory card that came with this kit was non-functional. This is the card that records the video. I tried it in other products I own and it didn’t work there either. In order to test the product I substituted the card from my digital camera, and my card worked just fine. Again if this product is defective what good is it? If some product this company ships out is not consistently of high quality this is risky for the consumer to invest in.

3. There are two settings for the video quality. The default setting is a poor quality video. It does not stream well and action is recorded in jerky motions or appears smear-y. Details on faces or objects are not very good on that setting. If you want higher quality you must change the setting but I note it will use more memory on the card and you may run out of space depending on how long you record for in before deleting the files. You may have to buy a new, larger memory card.

4. I tested the motion detection indoors and outdoors on a deck. Indoors it was fine, but outdoors, it recorded RAIN as motion and recorded every rainy moment that the camera was on. The recordings were in ten minute segments and recorded the entire time it rained. I live in New England where rain or drizzle is common. If the issue is you want to know when or if someone is on your property or who was at your front door, you’d have to visually scan every recorded segment to see what happened or if it was just rain, or just not view it if nothing problematic happened (like a break in). It also records small movements due to WIND. Tree leaves and bushes that move due to wind trigger the device to record. I guess if you record and only look at the video if your house is broken into then this would not be an issue.

5. The deleting of the 10 minute long recordings has to be done one by one. On the rainy night I had to delete many files which takes 4 button pushes per deletion. This took me about 15 minutes to do after 9 hours of motion-activated recording on a night of intermittent rain. That was too long to spend on that endeavor. There should be a “delete all” button or the process should be simplified in some other way.

6. The programming of the unit and its remote control is primitive. The steps seem odd and I needed to use the instruction manual to figure out something that should be simple such as how to turn the motion detection video on and how to delete a file. This is not really intuitive or user friendly. There seem to be more steps to do something simple and common than there need to be. The remote is small and the number of buttons is low. The buttons are not all unique and labeled with their actions which doesn’t make them user friendly.

7. The power source is an issue in general. If you place the unit outdoors the power cord runs right out of the unit and needs to plug in somewhere. Homeowners may not have a power source outdoors to plug the unit into. It could be tricky or damaging to the wire to try to run the cord indoors through a window or door to access an indoor electrical outlet. If this is for security reasons, such as if placed near a front door, a thief could easily unplug the unit (easiest) or cut the power cord (harder). I think the company is over-marketing this to homeowners as a home security system when its outdoor use is limited due to the electrical power challenges.

***However this is a system for amateurs to be able to install themselves, the alternative is a professional security system installed by a professional that includes electrical wiring that goes into walls. You can’t have it both ways!

Or, a battery operated unit is another option. Perhaps this unit, although weather-proof, really is optimal for INDOOR USE. Think about what your purpose for this unit is and what your environment is like, if it can support this do-it-yourself system.

Pros:

1. It’s inexpensive.

2. It’s easy to set up. My twelve year old son set it up in under 15 minutes. He has no experience with this type of system. You certainly do not need a professional to install this.

3. This seems ideally suited for INDOOR USE such as for a small business for staff monitoring or security purposes (should the business be robbed).

4. This system can also be used as live video cam. It does not have to be used to record or motion record. It is a better system than I once received as an unasked for baby shower gift which was a system to watch the baby napping in the crib when I was in other rooms in the house, to check to see if the baby was awake or sleeping or safe. I am unsure how many homeowners would desire to use such a system in their private homes but you never know…

I did not contact customer service to discuss this faulty equipment. I have been too busy to deal with the company, and I’ve already put in multiple nights of recording and daytime recordings, many hours of product review time working with the unit have been dedicated to this review, plus the time to write this. I put off publishing this waiting for time to call customer service. Sorry, but I have no time to take it to the next level to deal with customer service, so the experience I had as described will have to suffice.

OK unit, lousy company

by T. Hintz from Charlotte NC on 2010-06-08
I bought the Lorex LW2301 based on several reviews and a friends experience with it. The unit itself is pretty good. The video is passable and the features in the reciever are good.
My problem came because of aluminum siding interferring with the signal and I wanted to see if there was a way to extend the antenna a small amount to get it in past the siding and closer to the receiver. After waiting on the customer service line for 15 minutes I got a foreign sounding woman that said I needed to buy a range extender even though the camera and receiver were less than two feet apart. (That didn;t say much to the reputed 450 ft range) I sent an email to the customer service address provided on their web site and now a few days later still have received no response.
I finally got in touch with another friend who has installed similar units professionally and he got it sorted out. It now works fine, no thanks to Lorex. They appear very happy to take your money and to sell you anything else they can if you call back but when it comes to listening to the customer, not so much – if you can get them at all.

Not bad… but not for your business…

by I. R. Smart. from Seattle, WA on 2010-06-03
The Lorex LW2301 wireless camera system is easy to setup and use. It has a basic set of features that limit its application. It is a very good system for in-premises monitoring.

Setup

Unpacking and setting up the system is quick. For testing, I was able to have the system up and runnning in about 30 minutes. This excludes proper mounting/installation for actual usage.

The package includes everything you need to connect the system using a display (display not included). Once the base unit and camera were powered on, they paired automatically.

Features

The built-in IR motion sensor on the camera is a great feature. Other systems I have used rely only on the captures image, which can take processing time and is less accurate. The IR motion sensor range is wider than the camera view point, so motion is detected before the subject enters view, which is nice for a security system.

The base unit needs to be connected to a display that has composite vide input. This allows for connectivity with most TVs and monitor. The low resolution of the composite connection limits image quality. The user interface (UI) has a basic set of options that are navigated using directional arrows in both the unit and a remote control included in the package. The UI uses icons. Most are intuitive; some require referencing the user manual.

Recording can be done manually, by schedule and by motion detection.

The package includes a remote control. The remote is small and not very responsive. I had to hold it with one hand and press keys with the other to get it to respond. I found myself utilizing the base unit controls to avoid the frustration with the remote.

Conclusion

The camera system’s main strenght is its simplicity. For monitoring a small room or building entrance, it works well. It avoids complex software and computer setup. The system is not suited for remote monitoring and instant event notification or alerts because it is self-contained with no connectivity. It is not designed for remote security monitoring. This is its BIGGEST downfall, and why you can’t rely on it when you’re away from the business/store etc. What this means is that if someone breaks into your house/store etc when you’re NOT there, you’ll have no idea it happened. Yes, the Lorex will record it, but if the Lorex gets stolen during the break-in, that won’t help you. :D

If you are looking for simple local monotoring and record-keeping video, this is a low cost, easy-to-use option. No remote access means it loses a star. But you could certainly do a lot worse!

Not good on motion sensor

by Calum Stewart from Miami, Florida United States on 2010-06-02
Camera works fine is easy to set up and use.
The menu items are ok but find it annoying that you can delete individual recordings, but the file that is created with them remains and can’t be deleted, so have to scroll through the empty files to get to relevant ones. Definitely aggravating.
Biggest problem I have is with the motion sensor, it is too slow to trip, often find it has tripped but by the time it records the activity that tripped it has passed and it records open air. For example, forgetting I have it set up, I get home and walk through the house. Remember camera is on automatic, so go back to turn it off. Obviously I have tripped the camera walking past it both ways, but the first recording has nothing, because I am past the camera before it records. The second recording is my back as I walk away, so not much use for id purposes. If someone is slower at walking it probably would work better, but there is no way to change the sensitivity of the trip, so can only hope for slow intruders. I also extended the record time after trip to the maximum of 30 seconds in the hope that an intruder might dither a bit back and forward and be caught that way.
Everything else works fine and if you want to record for fixed time periods this would not be an issue, also does a good job of recording in the dark, although then the camera becomes very obvious with the red glow from the lens, very visible, but good picture quality for night.
Overall I like the camera for the money, but wish motion sensor was better.

A top price performer

by R.Cabell from Boyce, Vatican City State (Holy See) on 2010-06-01
Great value. Easy to set up. I added a $90 13″ TV monitor, replaced the 2GB chip with an 8GB, and liked things so much, added a second camera. Individual cameras require ac power, but transmit wireless to the control unit. When a camera’s passive IR detects motion, it records either a preset 5, 10 or 15 seconds… whatever you specify, and you can record at higher or lower quality. I use high quality and five seconds. It creates a new folder each day, and each recording is an audio-visual file whose name is composed of the time HHHHMMSS and camera #. e.g. 10450122-01.AVI…… Each 5-second hiQ recording runs about 800 MB. You can review the files, or take out the chip, put it in your computer and look at them with software like Windows Media Player. I live in the country, so not much goes on… it records 50-60 hits a day. At that rate, a 5GB chip will hold about 3 months. When the chip is full, you can set the system to start writing over the oldest. The passive IR takes getting used to. It and the night vision only work within about 10-15 ft of the camera. A quirk is that afternoon thermals from my woodpile and my driveway apparently are enough to trigger recording.

It works pretty well

by Angela V. from on 2010-09-08
This monitor works well for a visual, however the sound is not constantly functioning until our baby cries or makes a loud noise. We have been using a sound monitor as a backup for that reason. The monitor is great otherwise for watching the baby and giving us peace of mind.

Soooo disappointed

by carissa castaldo from on 2010-09-05
We just purchased this monitor from Fryes after not being able to secure the Philips Video monitor amazon. I could not be more disappointed. First of all, I was not impressed by the construction after taking it out of the box. It is very bulky and light, feels very cheaply made. Second of all, the moment we turned on the monitor, our Wifi was GONE!! So much for no interference. My husband works with computers and is also just as disappointed. False advertising for sure. Lastly, the VOX settings and automute are inconsistent. I slept in my babies room with the monitor last night just to see how it picks up the sounds, with VOX and without. Neither setting was consistent. I am not the kind of parent that needs to hear my baby breathing through a monitor, but I do like to catch my baby for night feedings before a full-on cry. We will be returning this monitor back to Fryes asap. The pros, although they do not level out the cons for me, are; excellent night vision and lullaby option. I would not suggest this monitor to anyone at all…

Good unit for the price

by Phil from on 2010-09-05
After looking at several monitors I picked the this one,I’m a grandparent and set for the babies a lot.
This unit gives us very good view and sound when they are napping.
There are a couple of set backs from the monitor I don’t care for and that is that the voice activation is not so you can choose to have it on or voice activated, just the sound activation. This makes us uneasy because we are not sure if it is working properly or not. Sleeping light is normal with babies around, so we like to hear all sounds coming from the sleeping areas. Also it would be nice if the camera could be rotated from the base, we set for our two year old grandson and sometimes he get out of the cameras view. Beside that we really like the monitor and would recommend it. This would also work well with the elderly.

Its a great video monitor!

by M. Shah from Oxford, Mississippi USA on 2010-09-01
The only issue I have with it is, although they say it is interference free, it seems to interfere with our wireless connection and cell phone. Otherwise, really good – love the lullaby feature. I would not have my baby sleep in his room if not for this monitor.

NOT ‘Interference Free’

by MamaBear from Santa Clarita, CA on 2010-09-01
Got this as a gift at our babyshower and I was excited to use it with our new baby. Unfortunately it did not live up to our expectations. It has constant interference problems with our WiFi!! Because of this we do not have any audio and can not use the Vox feature that turns the monitor ON when the baby cries. The only reason it received any stars is because the remote lullaby feature has proved to be handy and the video quality is decent. I wish that we had registered for a different monitor. We will be trying to return it to the manufacturer.

THEY WORK GREAT OR ME!

by tca118 from on 2010-08-31
I purchased a new interior starter system, plus a used interior starter system on ebay, plus two used “spy” clock/cameras on ebay.
The 4 camera system was up & running in 30 minutes or less, and my wife was observing our remodeling contractors from work.
The picture is good, the recorded files are easy to access, and they seem to be made well {I dropped the “clock” off the mantle & it still works).
The biggest problem I have with the system is that the last camera (farthest away from the PC) drops off now & then, & I have to “reboot” it.

It appears that new starter systems can be found for less than the price of a new add-on camera (If you shop around). So save some bucks & have a spare receiver to boot.

I am happy with the system, & it gets an A- grade from me.

WARNING TO SATELLITE INTERNET USERS!!!!

by Tahoe Gal from South Lake Tahoe on 2010-07-11
This product seems fine, works great, does what is advertised and is easy to use–for people with the right internet connection. HOWEVER–if you are a Satellite Internet user, you can not download live video nor view saved video. READ ALL FINE PRINT before you purchase and make sure the product will work with your computer and your internet system. The product works fine on my DSL at my cabin where I have it set up, however, when I go to my home to view the streaming video or to watch a playback of a recorded video from the Wilife website, my Satellite connection does not allow me to see the pictures.

According to customer support:

“On our website, and in the product documentation you will find that it requires an “Always-on broadband Internet connection like DSL, Cable Modem, or T1″.

A Satellite connection does not have the bandwidth required, to stream video consistently. Youtube for example is able to buffer and store video files locally, ours however is a live stream.

Our system requirements are in the Product Documentation and on our website.[...].

WiLife Indoor Camera System

by M. Guthrie from Sioux Falls, SD, USA on 2010-06-21
This camera system works as described. Setup was easy, and the picture quality is what I would expect for the price range. The higher-end features are subscription only, such as email and text alerts, and digital zoom/pan/tilt; but the standard setup is exactly what I was looking for, and at a good price.

I’m not sure about product life span, I guess I’ll have to check back in a year or so and see if my cameras are still working.

I like it – WHEN it works.

by Anna from Wisconsin on 2010-06-11
I bought this camera over a year ago. The picture quality is fantastic, set up is a bit complex, the signal is hard to get through walls (or my older wiring), and I’ve had nothing but problems with the software. My computer can not handle this program and often crashes. I have only manged to get my two cameras to work at the same time for a few weeks at a time before I’ve had to re-set it, etc… It is not worth the time or money. I found my cameras were just as effective as a crime deterent when they were not functioning. I wish I bought “dummy” cameras instead. It would have saved me the money, hassle and been just as effective. Perhaps if you have newer wiring in your home you may have better luck with this product.

Works for our vacation Home

by Mark Etrheim from on 2010-05-24
We have a second home about an hour away and I wanted a fast internet connection to use when we were there but the extra $49 month was hard to accept when we are there but a couple of days per month. Paying for monitored security was $35 from an outside company, so I upgraded to the faster DSL, installed these camera’s (3). We now can go on line and look at who is in the driveway, who is on the beach or boat house and see in the great room. When there is activity the software sends out an alert to my cell phone and email plus my wives. We can look at the picture that is sent along with it or go on line and look at live video or the recorded clip that sent the alert. I had no idea how often someone comes up our driveway, now have a record of it. I set up a separate hard drive in a hidden location in the building that is accessed over the network, so if someone comes in and takes the computer we will still have the video. it works great, It would be nice to have better quality pictures and video, it is adjustable and I have it set and max resolution at minimum frames per second which makes the video jumpy, but the image is good. I can read the license plates, but it would be difficult to get a facial image of enough quality to id someone with certainty unless they came close to the camera. the low light level ability is poor, but given that the bad guys would have to turn on the lights to see, I think it is OK.

Lorex LW2002W – Very Good, but not perfect.

by Bruce from on 2010-08-30
Pros:
Good picture quality.
Good audio quality.
Good build quality.
Good wireless range.
No interference or static.
Highly sensitive (VOX) Voice On switch (in non-power saving mode only).
Can connect to external TV.
Charger cradle is very convenient, no need to plug & unplug the charger.
The kick stand and belt clip are awesome features.

Cons:
Poor VOX sensitivity in power saving mode (LCD turns off to save power).
The Battery life is ~1 to 1.5 hrs. in non-power saving mode.
A battery level indicator is needed.
Should use replaceable AA rechargeable batteries, or longer lasting Lithium Ion.
Lacks a talk back feature (from monitor to camera).

Comments:
Used as a baby monitor. Besides the Cons, I love the monitor, it works perfectly as advertised.

Remote light is unnecessary.
Alarm is unnecessary.

The battery life could be prolonged significantly if the VOX worked properly in power saving mode. In power saving mode it takes a loud sound to activate the VOX, and is therefore unusable. I was able to mitigate the battery life issue by placing battery chargers at strategic locations around the house. One in the master bedroom, one in the living room, and of course the cradle charger in the kitchen. I had saved these chargers (power supplies) from old cordless phones we discarded over the years. The proper fitting jacks are available at Radio Shack, just be sure the charger voltage and jack polarity are correct (sorry, a little soldering is required).

Mom of two and I love it!!!

by Sublime from on 2010-08-30
I have had this unit about a month now and so far have not seen anything wrong with it. I was a little hesitant to purchase due to the neg comments concerning the noise control. I have not had a prob with the units sound not activating. It comes on when my daughter sucks her pacifier. So with that said I think it’s pretty sensitive. FYI, there is a sensitivity setting on the camera so you can control when the sound activates. (I’m assuming the others didn’t have the setting correct on that.) I plugged it into my 40″ LED TV and it looked pretty good. Not a single complaint! It does exactly what I need it to do! The signal is great! I have the camera upstairs and I am able to take it all around our 1700 sq ft. townhome without interference. Plus we can take it outside and almost walk around the building without interference… there are 6 townhomes/building if that helps!!! Good luck with your decision, I know I personally really like this unit!

OK system, but not as primary baby monitor

by L Von Steiner from Indianoplace, IN on 2010-08-26
After 10months with this system and an extra camera, here are my comments.

PROS:
+ The picture and sound quality is pretty good
+ The range is OK within a medium-sized house – signal is strong until it breaks altogether
+ No interference with wifi (and I have a lot of it)
+ Multi-voltage power supplies so we could use them on our travels overseas without worrying about voltage adaptors
+ Hooks up to TV/ video very nicely – I connected it to a video capture card and piped the video through my home security system which worked really well.
+ Night vision is pretty good for the range of the camera

CONS:
- Menu design is retarded – meaningless options and no way to tell what’s selected
- the light has an on/ off switch that does nothing (it’s always on).
- Sound circuitry must have a threshold to trigger it as it turns off to save power. This is not a problem if it kicks in reliably – but it DOESN’T. We have heard our babies crying through the wall and the monitor is silent for ages, until it finally wakes up.
- Camera angle of view is very narrow. I had to build a pole to put it on so that I could see the whole crib from above. Now the twins are in separate cribs, the camera is across the room in the opposite ceiling corner. Nowhere left to go when they start getting out of their beds.
- the night vision uses a circle of red LEDS (infrared?) to illuminate the room for its night vision – they’re pretty unobtrusive, but there’s a back lit button on top that’s really bright and won’t turn off (see light switch comment above).

Overall, the technology exists to make this an awesome product. However, they seem to have taken shortcuts to cut production costs that greatly compromise this.

If you’re looking for looking to pair this with a DECT monitor that has reliable sound and use this to visually make sure your baby isn’t in trouble, it’s fine, if a bit expensive. If you’re wanting just one unit, though, you should get a reliable audio monitor instead.

Elder Care monitoring – GREAT range !!

I’m one of those “baby boomers” caring for an elderly parent now…my baby monitoring days are over. Finding a good system that will work when the parent is in a different house isn’t easy. Mom lives in the house right next door to us….about 35 feet away. Still, most baby monitors won’t work if the “range” is obstructed. I talked to ADT security which has wonderful systems…if you want to spend several thousand dollars. I tried another baby monitor which didn’t work….so started looking into larger systems from Lorex. I had it narrowed down to two, each with 4 wireless cameras and DVR/Internet box, etc. Then this portable monitor caught my eye. After reading the reviews I was certain it wouldn’t work. But I decided that returning things to Amazon.com is so easy I had nothing to lose. I’m so glad I decided to try it !!! I’m thrilled with it !!! The camera portion is now sitting in Mom’s living room..about 45 feet from the front of our home. The monitor is next to me….in my bedroom which is on the second floor of our home. Mom’s house is a double….the “other side” is empty and is the side that is between Mom and our home !! So we’re most definately NOT unobstructed !!! I have a dual network router in our home as well as two cordless phone systems. As I walk through the house holding the monitor, I WILL lose the signal on occasion…or get “low signal” message. But I’m amazed that it doesn’t happen in many areas of my home. I’m going to take the camera I have and try it in two other places in Mom’s house. If it works in those areas as well, I’ll be ordering two more cameras. So don’t always trust negative reviews !!! If you like the product and are at all curious…TRY IT !!! Amazon makes returns painless….printable shipping labels, postal service pickup…..very easy. As for this baby monitor…I’ll be sleeping so much better tonight knowing I can check on my Mother at 2:00 in the morning if I feel the need. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is the sound, which is “tinny” but has great volume. The picture is great, considering the distance between camera and monitor. It upgrades to 4 cameras and has a built in alarm.

We really like this monitor

by rka74ca from on 2010-08-19
so, the only problem we have had with this monitor is if it is not attached to the base, the battery seems to die relatively quickly- definitely needs to be attached at night, or it might die in the middle of the night and you would never know it since it doesn’t beep or otherwise let you know before it turns itself off – as long as it’s attached to the base, it’s been fine. Also when traveling we had problems in one house with being too far from the base with low signal at certain angles but after playing around with it we were able to get it to work, and everywhere else we’ve been it’s been fine (even upstairs, etc.). We have not had a problem with only hearing noises above a certain volume as others have complained about- it turns on with very quiet noises, not just loud crying, and I don’t think anyone can stay awake to listen to breathing sounds all night (as a pediatrician, I really think it would alert you to any noise that might signal a concern.) It has no interference, and you don’t have to worry about privacy and seeing into other babies cribs at night! Overall, we’ve been very happy.

wilife

by Phillip Garrett from Columbia, MD on 2010-08-06
This doesn’t record all activity. It seems to only record in 10-15 increments. When it does record, it emails a 5-10 sec video. I’m unable to see live video because of where I work, the firewalls don’t allow the connection. The video quality is pretty good.

Great security system for home

by Shirley Gou from on 2010-07-25
We got this security system to keep an eye on our nannies, and the number one thing I was really worried about was the set up. Surprisingly, I was able to get the camera up and running literally right out of the box. Although you need a somewhat powerful computer to set up more than one camera, as I had to upgrade my computer when we had 2 cameras. And since it was running on windows 7, I had a bit of issue with firewall blocking my cameras. Other than the minor set backs, I’d say the system is pretty easy to set up and easy to use.

JUNK!!!

by Pavel Miller from los angeles on 2010-07-22
I bought this item due to Logitech having for the most part good quality products. However they have missed the mark on this. The camera is very easy to use and install, the motion detection is great since it doesn’t record hours of no activity. The problem aside from having low visual quality, is junk. I was under the impression that this devise is wireless. It is not!! the camera has to be constantly plugged into the computer. Since I have a laptop it doesn’t make any sense for me to keep moving the “hidden camera clock” the point is that its supposed to be hidden and left in one place. Its not very hidden when its moving all the time.
Secondly, the clock broke the first week. After i unplugged the clock from the socket it froze, never to work again. Although the camera continued to work.
Thirdly, the support website is really great, until you realize that non of the features work unless you pay an additional yearly fee. So the commend center is filled with nifty options that dont work.
Fourthly, although it easy to override, the camera stops recording when the computer is in stand by mode. The problem is that its not good for the life of the computer to always be on.

It doesn’t record sound!

by Gorlank from New York on 2010-07-16
I bought it as nanny cam.

It was easy to install and use. However, it doesn’t record sound which is important function to me as a nanny cam. When you set it to motion mode (only record when there is motion detected), it doesn’t pick up fine motions. Therefore, I have to set it to continuous recording.

I only bought one camera (because it’s so expensive) and I set it up in the living room. Since it doesn’t record sound, I can’t tell what kind of tone she is using when she is interacting with my baby and I can’t tell what the nanny is doing when she goes to the kitchen or my bedrooms.

I returned the product mainly because it doesn’t record sound. If you need a cam for Surveillance purple, sound recording might not be important. Yet, you can find a cheaper one for that purpose.

get something else

by I<3 Amazon from TX, US on 2010-04-05
Saw good and bad review decided to give it a try plugged it in and immediately had the cord issue everyone else seemed to be having i didn’t even finish installing it or anything i unplugged it and sent it back. If someone were to accidentally hit the clock or move it, it would just stop recording because of the faulty plug so whats the point?? You should not have to work around that when you are trying to be safe!

DO NOT BUY

by Joseph from on 2010-09-06
Don’t buy!!!!
I recently bought two cameras from WiLife, which is the same company as Logitech. I only received a partial order. When I called customer service to find out what happened to my order, he stated that one of the cameras was on back order and it will not be available for several weeks. I asked him why didn’t the website motioned that when I was purchasing the items on-line? He refused to answer my question. Logitech actually charged my credit card for items they did not have in stock. The customer service rep was very discourteous, unfriendly and did not even apologized for the inconvenience. He immediately offered to refund my credit card for the charges and gave me an RMA number to return the rest of the order. I would have kept the merchandize if he would have shown some interest in keeping my business. I guess they don’t need the business.I bought the AT&amp;T Home Monitoring System and it is much better and cheaper.

Logitech wilife outdoor camera fix – Caps C26, C27, C31 and C32

by steven a markham from on 2010-08-22
The Logitech outdoor cameras have a known defect (caps melting).

[...]

They fail in about a year. This is due to the following four 1000uF capacitors: C26, C27, C31 and C32. The caps that were in the original release were 10 volt caps. The next release they were 16 volt. I had 7 dead cameras. I replaced them with a 25 volt high quality cap and they have worked ever since. The caps don’t fit perfectly (the original are 8mm diameter versus the 12.5mm that I put in) so you’ll need to insulate the leads and let them float above the circuit board. Here is the Digi-key part number for the cap I used: UHE1E102MHD6.
Here is the link for the cap [...]
They are 81 cents each.
The caps are from Nichicon and are Aluminum Electrolytic. They are rated for 10,000 hours at 105 degrees C. They are through hole, radial can, 12.5mm diameter.
I used a high reliability type HE. Here is a link. You could also use TT, PA, HV, your choice.

Lost 2 in one month

by Milesteg from on 2010-07-11
We bought this system a couple of years ago so we could keep an eye on the dog kennel while we were at work. The mounting system is a little weak for an outside system. There really isn’t a good way to lock it in and the wind in our area would slowly move them out of shot. Fortunatly it uses a standard thread so you can make your own. What really irritated me was that I lost both outside camera’s within a month of each other. Granted I got around 2 years out of mine but for the price you pay I expected they would last better than that. Customer support was great when ever I talked to them, and the free webstreaming was nice. It did take a while to get this running on vista 64 bit but I didn’t have any problems on windows 7 64bit. All in all I was happy with the software and support but the hardware was definetly made with a survival time limit. This is one of those products where if you buy it don’t expect it to last too long.

Good Features but Poor Quality

by James Lindbloom from Boise, ID on 2010-06-27
One reviewer suggested that those who have “trouble” with this product might be technically challenged, which is a false assumption since he doesn’t know these individuals personally. Those reviewers probably just expected the product to work as advertised, which it doesn’t. Just for the record, I build computers, service networks, and work with various types of electrical equipment from blood analyzers to HDTV hardware, and the outdoor model of this product has one major failing …. reliability! Couple that with confusing warranty requirements and poor support I consider buying this outdoor camera a poor investment because it will eventually fail. Don’t get me wrong …. when it works it has great features, but eventually the camera will likely die. I installed 4 of these at home and 2 at church in the last 3 years. 2 have since been replaced under warranty and another was replaced by an additional purchase. Currently only 2 of these cameras work at all. Although the features are terrific, they are useless when the camera dies. I suspect the outdoor cameras would function correctly if installed inside when the temperature is more consistent … but outdoors they fail. There are a couple of other annoying distractions as well. If you install on the wrong side of your Service Panel the camera will fail …. as well as failing if installed too far from the camera’s USB Receiver. If you install too close to a photo cell from a night light the camera will also fail. The thumbscrew mounting post assembly is poorly designed and is marginal at best in locking the camera to it’s desired position. A bird flying into or landing on the camera will change it’s aiming point. And birds will … and do. So if you buy this camera be aware of it’s shortcomings …

Didn’t last 6 weeks

by snew from on 2010-09-08
I bought this product in early July. My baby just turned 6 weeks today and this product is already broken! It has been turned on MAYBE 5 times since purchased. The monitor worked great the 3 times we actually used it with the baby! After looking further into the negative reviews I see that the same exact problem that I am having happened to another purchaser. My monitor constantly says there is no signal. I tried to pair the camera with the lcd to correct this problem and apparently the “pair” function does not work. Also, in the instruction manual there is not a manufacturers name/number/email. So when this product breaks, the seller does not take refunds or exchanges after 10 days and apparently there is no manufacturer to call to fix any problems.

It is definitely not worth $120 if it only lasts a handful of uses! So now I am out that money and have to buy another monitor! SOOOO Frustrating!!!!!

I have this for 10 months and could not imagine what i would do without it!!

by Jack Goodheart from on 2010-08-25
This is my 3rd child but my first video monitor. I don’t know how I did it with my first two and not having this video monitor. Very easy to set up and use. The video quality is great as is the sound quality – I love the fact that the speaker only goes on when there is sound ands the most amazing thing about it is that can actually respond to my child via the built in 2 way Radio that future is truly amazing! you can see your baby in full color and at night the picture is great but black and white. and it is cheaper then all other brands WONDERFUL item and I would HIGHLY recommend it!!!

Had two units and they’re both dead – Seller doesn’t stand behind product

by C. Fournier from Virginia on 2010-08-22
I have had two of these units. The first, when received, did not work because the camera and monitor would not pair. After using the replacement unit for occasional naps over the past 3 months it’s image slowly died one night and now it has the same problem.

Unfortunately, this product is not made to last and DBRoth is not offering to assure the quality of it’s products.
Save yourself the headache and buy a brand name monitor from a reputable business.

But if you’re still interested, here is a list of the pros and cons from my point of view.

Pros:
- Good video quality.
- You can talk to the baby from the monitor, so sometimes I was able to comfort my daughter without going into her room and I haven’t been able to find this with another video monitor.
- It has a pretty good range. I could take it outside and work in the garden on most sides of my house.
- Both the monitor and camera have batteries that allow the units to work for about 2 – 3 hours without being plugged in.
- Video image contrast is adjustable.

Cons:
- In theory you are able to manually press a button on the camera and the monitor to “pair” the units – that is, they lock into each others signals. My first unit never paired. My second unit worked for 3 months and then one night the video slowly went black and it would no longer pair. DBRoth would not give me an exchange or refund.
- This is a generic, no name product. There is no customer service number or brand name for product support in the manual.
- There is no indication on the monitor for battery life remaining. If you use the camera without the plug the only way you can tell the camera is dying is that the signal starts going in and out and then quits all together. This happened a couple of times before I realized what was going on, and you have to re-pair the items by holding them both together, removing the batteries, and hoping that function works. My daughter woke up from the disturbances each time.
- Monitor screen is only visible from head-on.
- Monitor switches randomly between normal sound listening mode into alarm mode, which doesn’t work so well. In this mode it doesn’t have any sound listening, it just emits a single alarm when a noise of a certain decibel is picked up. My daughter was crying her head off and the alarm only went off once during the whole fit.
- As another user noted, the monitor noise only comes on when a noise of a certain decibel is detected. Sometimes this was true, sometimes the sound stayed on all the time. There was no rhyme or reason to how it chose from these three modes.
- The monitor unit is larger than comparable units and can’t be clipped to a belt or propped in a way that the image is readily visible.
- When you turn on the monitor there is a loud initiation tune that is played. My husband often forgot and would turn on the monitor before leaving the nursery, only to wake my daughter.

Monitor – for peace of mind

by WJO from Florida on 2010-04-09
I use this monitor to let me keep an eye on my 87 yr old mother who has moderate dementia. It has a very clear monitor picture, the sound quality is way above average and the convenience of moving from room to room with my part of the monitor is awesome. I keep it in my bedroom at night, take it throughout the rest of the house during the day and even into the back yard when I’m working in my garden. It also eases her mind because she knows she can call to me when she needs me. I can answer her to let her know I’ll be there shortly. I have tried several monitors over the past 6 or 7 years but this is the first one that meets all of our needs. I’m truly happy with this monitor.

An Unnessesary Dissapointment

by Richard J. Larson from on 2010-03-25
This model has good video quality and good audio quality. It includes battery pack for both pieces which is nice. However there is a terrible oversight that ruins this product in my opinion. The speaker always stays in off mode and comes on only if the sound gets to a certain decibel level. This is highly irritating because I cannot hear the small noises that can also be important. It didn’t even pick it up when my daughter was faintly crying! So forget about hearing your child unless they are crying or talking loudly. I’m sure it’s just a battery saving feature if they are running on the batteries, but why didn’t they make it possible to change the setting on the speaker to full time?!! If I can’t hear my infant stirring or if she’s sick and possibly vomiting, this is not a safe baby monitor to me. Sure it has video, but who wants to keep their eyes glued to a video receiver? Otherwise it would be a good monitor. Good luck.

Perfect (so far)

by hoos30 from Washington, DC on 2010-07-12
I’ve only had my camera installed a for a little over three weeks so I can’t speak to the longevity of the product, but so far this security suite has been great for us. Ease of installation, picture quality, features (emailing motion detected images is great!) have been wonderful.

I will update the review after I pass the dreaded 12 month mark.

Caveat Emptor With This Security System

by Arthur Onna from Los Angeles, CA on 2010-06-25
I thought I was getting a fairly reasonable outdoor security camera system. Installation was a breeze. However, I was very disappointed that the outdoor camera lasted less than two months! As a result, it has been over five months collecting dust on my shelf. Despite the fact that I have five months of warranty left. Forget about brand loyalty; this outdoor security camera is the pits! Customer service? They should know by now, that this outdoor camera gets very hot. And as a result, it is bound to fail–pure and simple! Spend more time on quality control! If I had my way, this camera is for the highway and gets no stars. My advice is to stay away from this product!

Manufacturer Support Does not Exist

by MZC from Virginia Beach on 2010-03-25
The camera works. The software works. I tried originally to install on laptop and it did not work at all (USB obviously not sufficient). Tried to remove software. Can’t do it as it keeps running. Tried to contact “Support” via email and phone – does not work. If you have problems, pack it up and send it back. Waited on phone over 11 minutes just to be disconnected. It’s OK. No more/no less. Don’t know how to store info. They want you to buy “Platinum” to do more (zoom, etc.). False advertising if you think you”ll get that with the regular package. I am not inclined to spend more considering the total lack of Customer Support. I, personally, would rather spend more and have the support. Will never buy this brand name in the future.Logitech WiLife Digital Video Security–Outdoor Master System Camera

A lot better than expected

by ThisIsCNN from on 2010-08-16
I usually don’t write reviews, but in this case I felt that I had to. This unit was very easy to mount and run wires for. The picture quality is very very good, especially for the price. I have friends who install these types of systems all the time, and they couldn’t even come close to the price of this system. I have worked with cctv systems in the past, and the usb flash drive backup is a very nice feature. With a 500gb hard drive, you will get a couple of weeks of video that you can review. I cannot speak as to the longevity of this system, as it has only been installed since yesterday, but so far, I am extremely pleased with this purchase.

Outstanding company and Very good full system

by M. Hajar from Chi,usa on 2010-04-13
I’m happy with the system and the company outstanding customer support & after sales service. They resolved big problem within few days. I placed the order at Amazon, no place to request the cameras input voltage to be 240v and not 120v. After receiving the system, I emailed the company and they replied with the following answer: “our shipment guy don’t know your 240V special requirement. I will send another 4 x 240V Power adapter to you tomorrow.” And yes they did send me 4 more adapters with no questions asked or anything to pay. The company is definitely professional. I’m pleased with system; I tested everything, and all working as expected. I tested the LAN connection (easy). I also tested the WAN (remote access). It was a bit difficult but manageable with some networking knowledge. Its working well with DSL & its slow by dialup. The picture on my LCD TV does not show the room true colors. I don’t know why yet. Cameras are NOT made by Sharp or Sony but they said they are made from sharp or Sony parts. They look high quality cams. The documentation was supplied by email not in the box(But not full functions docs). This company got my trust and they deserve an outstanding review.

Don’t bother

by Corey G from Spokane, WA USA on 2009-09-22
This item comes at a great price but it’s usability is horrible! First, the software doesn’t do what it says, and if it does, good luck figuring out how! Second, if you think you can just bypass using the supplied (horrible) software written by a non-english speaking person, you’re wrong (I was too). Windows DOES recognize this as a video device, just like a webcam – BUT, you will only get one channel and there are no other options available. I could go into more detail about what it does/doesn’t do but to sum it up quickly, if you want a decent DVR system, this is not it. In fact, I’m surprised Amazon allows an item like this to be sold here.

if you only care about cost, not time or quality, buy it

by B. Corcoran from Syracuse NY on 2009-03-31
the frame rate is horrible, and the quality could be MUCH better, but, for the price, it’s pretty acceptable.. if you’re ONLY going for price, and willing to deal with the related headaches, buy it, personally, I think the time wasted, and quality difference, spend the extra money, and get something better..

software doesn’t work as advertised

by Kent Brooten from Kent, WA on 2009-03-12
I have been in contact with the company who produces this device (in Hong Kong). I sent a detailed explanation (with graphics) showing how the software failed to work as advertised. I found others who wrote reviews complaining of the same problem: it won’t send emails when motion is detected. They send me new drivers (didn’t help) and send me of new CD (of the SAME version of the software). the last time I asked if they were going to update the software, they apologized for the faulty hardware and suggested I return it to them for replacement. It’s clear they don’t understand nor have they tested the software properly.
If you want to monitor 4 video cameras, it works. If you want the software to do everything as advertised, forget it.

Stay away!

by B. Holtappels from NYC metro area, USA on 2009-01-23
I bought this product for ugrading a perfectly working CCTV system from PCI (Connexant based) to USB. Turns out that after hours and hours of tweaking and downloading every driver that remotely had anything to do with it, I had to give up. It is built on the STK160 chipset made by Systek Taiwan, which is the only source for any driver and it does not meet even the very lowest quality standards.

It does NOT work with ANY other Windows software except on channel 1 (it is a 4 channel device) WITHOUT AUDIO. It works only after reboot with no other apps running and eats up 100% of the CPU. The software that comes with it does work on more than 1 channel, but it is very crash happy and has almost no features, not even the basic ones. It is so bad that it is not worth anyone’s time. Do yourself a favor and buy another product.

I tried it on a Gigabyte P5 mainboard with Core 2 Duo and 2 GB RAM, XP SP2, and for reference on an IBM T41 laptop, with a fresh XP install with SP3. Same experience on both.

I am currently considering the Swann Guardian, but am hesitant after this experience.

Claims to be Vista friendly and is the farthest thing from it!!!! after numerous attempts, driver downloads and tech support calls. . . . it is not for Vista
