Surprising small package

First, it was a lot smaller than I had imagined, and there are no “stops” to keep your equipment from sliding off if you don’t have it screwed on tightly enough.

Well, those “faults” are actually great features. It easily slides into a side pocket of my camera case(s), and the tall and short brackets are ideal if you need to change up lights/microphone from time to time. It is sturdy, you will not lose the screw – it is on to stay.

Just make sure your equipment is properly secured. I don’t use any of the other brackets I purchased. This is my go-to on nearly every occasion. So I’m giving it a reluctant but well-earned five stars.

This is a piece of plastic from China which should cost no more than $3; it is somewhat flexible and not ABS. However, if you need it, it is essential. The screw threads are continuous, which makes for easy threading. And it works with the 35mm. equiv. wide angle of the Panasonic HS700k camcorder without vignetting IF you do not have a UV filter also inserted behind it. With a UV filter [we have a B+K 46mm.] then there is vignetting at the sides when fully wide angle. When going to, say, 42mm. equivalent, then this vignetting disappears when used with a filter. Also, the inside – while black – is sort of shiny and reflective. May have to overspray with UltraFlatBlack paint to get it to do its job. At this price, it should have been factory sandblasted to a perfectly non-reflective, matte black finish. Nope, just standard molding. No case, just a thin cardboard box. Again, a $3 item as it is.

Nice general use mic

I use this with my HV30. I tend to use this mic often even though I have a wired and a wireless lapel mic. It works better than the built in mic and since image quality is easily forgiven where as sound quality is not, investing in sound equipment is important. I think I will be moving to an external digital sound recorder like the Zoom H4 that uses XLR mics, but if you’re not ready to make that kind of investment, this mic works very well. I paid $149 and consider it a good investment.

Great mic – sometimes annoying shock mount

This microphone is perfect for digital/amateur filmmaking. It’s got good sound quality and can be attached to a boom pole. The only real problem I have with it is how sensitive it is to minuscule movement noise. For the most part the mic works very well but sometimes I hear what sounds like a gentle knock or a low pitched squeak. At first I had no idea what it was but then I discovered that it was due to the shock mount. The rubber bands were rubbing against the mount, which is made of plastic, and was squeaking on the shock mount and the microphone was picking up that noise.

The first thing I did was apply a little powdered graphite to the rubber bands and the attachment points on the mount. It sort of worked. It was not as noticeable as it was before but I could still here it.

After a couple of movie projects I ultimately decided to remove the shock mount and replace it with an immovable piece of hardware for attaching it to the boom pole. Now the knocking noises only occur when something happens on the boom pole and not the microphone. This makes using the RODE Microphone a lot better.

This microphone is a perfect buy for filmmakers with a budget. Just remember to detach the shock mount. Don’t get rid of it. It’s still handy to have. Just don’t use it for boom pole shooting.

Great audio but flimsy design

I bought this mic because I, probably like you, was planning to shoot a movie with a common hand-held HD camera and virtually no budget to splurge for the good stuff. Though the audio you get from this mic is top notch, the mic was all but destroyed on a four week trip that I filmed in hopes of making a documentary. Firstly, the rubber bands that suspend the mic began squeaking with every little movement of the camera, which spoiled hours of audio before I was able to find a fix (vaseline). The bands also constantly broke and had to be replaced, which is a waste of time out on the field when filming. It may help to double up on the rubber bands, or buy your own because the included ones don’t tolerate rough wear. Honestly I’m not sure why the mic needs a shock mount at all. Many shotgun mics firmly attach to the hot shoe with no suspension and function equally well.

After more use, the plastic cold foot just wore down and began to slide out of the shoe, needing to be wrapped in duct tape to not fall off completely. A metal foot with a better locking mechanism would be appreciated.

Also as you’re probably aware, you’re going to need an adapter to use this with many of Canon’s video cameras which use a small proprietary shoe system, and all the adapters I could find are cheap plastic crap which are sure to break as well.

Like I said, the audio is great, but I’m upset that I left for the trip with a brand new snazzy mic and came back with war-torn remains brutally duct taped to my camera. I think they should use more metal and redesign the shock mount to make this product durable enough for an extended shoot.

Rode VideoMic doesn’t fit Canon HFS 100 Vixia camcorder

I had to:

1. Remove the mic shoe adaptor completely and discard it
2. Make a shoe adaptor using strap iron, one bolt, four washers and three nuts
3. Raise the mic higher so the flash can open
4. Turn the mic base around to prevent casting flash shadows on the subjects

This is Rode’s response:

Almost useful.

I bought this for my Canon HFs21 camcorder for added protection from lens flares and dust when not in use. Some would argue that I don’t need a lens hood for this particular model camera but that’s not the point. If your product sucks, it sucks.

Just to be clear my whole transaction with the seller was top notch. I’m ragging on the actual product.

Mennon get your act together. Like other reviews, I found later, the lens hood can be seen by the camera when I widen out. I can forgive the cheap white lens cap that you have to squeeze on and the weak threading for the cap’s strap BUT seeing my own lens hood at the corners of my frame is bull! Sure I can just zoom in a little to squeeze them out but I shouldn’t have to. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO!! I’m seriously considering replacing this with a slr lens hood.

Purchased this for the vixia HF S10. Looks nice on the camera, gives it some much needed added weight for slightly better stability. The plastic doesn’t seem to be as strong and sturdy as other reviews may have mentioned. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not flaky plastic, but there’s some flex to it. Only gripe is it’s angled a little too much. On full out zoom with a UV lens on, you probably won’t notice any vignetting on the LCD screen, but when uploaded and played back on the computer, you’ll see it. Add an additional lens on, say a central polarizer, and you’ll definitely notice it on the LCD screen and even more so in playback on your computer. A little annoying; but get some sand paper, lay it on a flat solid surface, and then sand down the lens hood by a few millimeters. Don’t try sanding down the hood by applying sand paper to it! May cause an uneven length of the hood. Lay the sand paper on concrete and then apply the hood lens to the sand paper, central force on the back of the hood should create a rather even trimming all the way around the hood front. With some general purpose 150 grit sandpaper, it took me about 30 seconds. It’s quick and easy. This took care of the vignetting and even made the lens hood seem a little more sturdy (as most of the flex was near the tip of the hood). Minus this little, easily correctable issue; it’s a good product and for the price can’t be beat.

Awesome, effective product!

Great buy; solid, simple and effective product – does what it says (and looks great on the camcorder!). Purchased this for a Canon HFS-200 for lens flare reduction and lens protection purposes (plus wanted the end cap for additional dust control purposes). Fits perfectly, though be careful the first few times when screwing it on so as not to strip the threads – no worries there now, though; now that it is “broken-in” it goes on like a champ, and the adjustable locking ring allows for easy and precise horizontal alignment.

There’s no hint of the edges/corners of it in frame when zoomed fully in or out, but it does (physically) block half the light from pop-up flash when shooting stills in “photo mode,” resulting in half-lit scenes (the upper half). Solution: simply remove it when shooting stills that require the flash, then easily re-attach it later.

Would buy this reasonably priced, effective product again a hundred times over!

For three years I’ve been waiting patiently for someone to release an inexpensive LED video light. I’ve even tried to hack my own a few times to very mediocre results. I was so happy when the listing for this light popped up on Amazon, I bought it immediately and when I received it I was not disappointed: It’s powerful enough to light an interview or add fill in a daylight shot, it’s relatively light and it lasts well over an hour before requiring a recharge (I will definitely pick up a second one as a spare before doing a long interview or any once-in-a-lifetime shooting.)

So far, I am very satisfied with this light. I do have two concerns and they are both the result of its low price: 1) the adjustable arm that it is mounted on is very weak and seems destined to fail and 2) there is no quick and accurate way of dimming the light.

The adjustable arm is made of cheap plastic and seems barely strong enough to hold the weight of the light. The two adjustment screw-knobs often fail to securely hold their position causing the light to occasionally flop down without warning. I’ve already started looking at products I might be able to adapt as a replacement for the arm when it eventually breaks. Perhaps I can hack a 570 Universal To Shoe Adapter to hold it.

The inability to dim the light definitely creates some aesthetic challenges, but better that than no on-board light. I used to carry a dimmable Bescor light with a battery the same size and weight as a motorcycle battery! It would only hold power for about 30 minutes of shooting. When it finally died I just couldn’t bring myself to buy another one… I hated lugging that light and battery around. I’ll take this LED without the ability to dim over that monster any day of the week. And I prefer the quality of the light more with this LED light. The Bescor was such a flamethrower (even dialed down) that my subjects too often had a “deer in the headlights” look. This light is daylight balanced and gives a much more natural look to the scene (though it would be nice if it came in a tungsten model as well.)

While dimming would be nice, I’m not ready to shell out $300 or more to get it, so I’ll make due with moving the light farther away from the subject by mounting it on the Manfrotto 233B Camera Mount Flash Bracket (Black)
which can extend the light up more than 20″ and move it out at an angle away from the camera.

Since I doubt I’m ever going to see a dimmer control or a metal mounting arm on an LED light in this price range, rather than complain about what it doesn’t have, I’m grateful that it’s an adequate, flicker-free light source that I didn’t have to hack together myself! If you’ve been waiting for a rechargeable, inexpensive, bright LED video light with no dead spots, this may be your light.

Bought this to use on a V-STROM 1000cc but even straight up my camara still films my bike dashboard and not the road. So I sold it to a custom biker friend and will try a different one. Overall the product is great, well finished, easy to install. Do recommend.

Solid and practical

Great design and solid construction. My only complaint is that it transmits too much vibration into my Canon HF-M31 Camcorder. This is largely the fault of the bike that has substantial vibration (BMW r1200GS) and a camera sensor that is excessively prone to vibration. If you own a Canon Vixia (most models) you might want to read up on vibes prior to purchase. No fault to RAM on this one…the problem persists throghout many other brand mounting methods. On the plus side, there are numerous mounting heads available, so even if this won’t work for my camcorder, I can easily convert it to an iphone or gps holder…even a coffee mug holder with the purchase of the right bracket. Pretty remarkable really.

I installed the adaptor in the TRIUMPH TIGER 1050 handle bar.. Tried an old camcorder (still using mini magtapes) and then a Nikon digital camera with video .. Great fitting and stability also at medium speed . Beware, cameras were protected by the motorcycle windscreen..
I also pushed a small mini webcam Muvi without the screw/plate adaptor, just pressed in the top clamp.. NICE!! It works..

Ram Mount

I was so impressed by video shot by another biker using this product. The video had none of the jiggly vibration so often encountered with other cheaper mounts. I bought it for a 1250mi bike trip I am going on and hope to get the same results. When I return I will report on the results I got. At this point I can only comment that ram mount is well made from metal with 2 heavy duty rubber balls that dampen the road vibration. It’s very easy to install It comes with 2 different size U bolts for mounting on your handle bars.
The vendor shipped within 24hrs and I received it within a few days.
