The Canon HV40 – HD Video phenomenal

I made a series of home videos and put in a standard DVD using a standard video camera. And although video looks good there is no comparison with my new Canon HV40 camcorder. The HV40 Canon DiG! C III image processor DV high-speed and quality of high data processing definition. It also has a high accuracy of 43 mm in diameter aspherical lens with 10x zoom. It is a broad agreement between the amateur and professional, a leader Canon's global lens technology – for the broadcast and SLR lenses. Well, I have to say that after seeing what occurs with this unit recently, I felt like a pro real!

HD video is limited to providing great results, crystal clear water. Like all camcorders, the images are best when the camera is connected to the TV. But what really excited me was the quality of the video footage of the Canon HV40 once he was transferred to a DVD standard.

While I plan to buy a blu ray burner and player once prices fall, I am more than happy to continue this transfer system a standard DVD. The cost is so low in comparison and, as I said before, the video quality is so great in a standard DVD, I can not imagine myself ever fully committed until there is a large reduction in the price of media in high definition.

So if you're considering a camcorder high definition, but are not, like me, willing to spend a lot of money on media high definition at this stage, I recommend buying the Canon HV40. It's a fantastic camera, and video will be noticeably better, even in a normal dvd.

The Canon HV40 is a great camera that has all characteristics of a beginner or advanced cameraman who may want or need at a fraction of the cost of a video camera PRO. It is also incredibly compact. Buy this camera is a bargain for what it offers!

We recently purchased this camera and I have to say it’s been really fun to use. We have had no problems with it so far. It just takes awhile to get used to the small size. You can’t move it quickly or the picture jumps around. My kids took it under water and it worked great.

Kodak PlaySport handheld video camera

This unit is well constructed and significantly smaller than the previous Zi-6 and Zi-8 cameras.
The battery and SDHC changes easily and the settings options on the camera are clear cut.
I wish that minutes of battery usage left could be displayed like they are on the larger camcorders.
Another nice feature would be total percentage of space used on the SDHC. Overall, I have tested
the video during boating, fly fishing and other action sports and it has functioned well. I would recommed this
product for anyone who travels or engages in water sporting activites.

Zoom is Worthless

disappointing…

by trancemuter from on 2010-09-05
I was very excited about this camera before I got it then I had to find out that it’s kind of a deception. The problems are the following:

1. It’s not true HD the only usable format to shoot with is the 720p 60fps, that looks decent, the 720p 30fps format is very jerky, looks like 15fps and the 1080p 30fps is very choppy, unusable, and it is interpolated in the camera software or something because the quality of the picture is not very good it definitely doesn’t look full HD. To add to the problems, when you switch to 1080p you loose about 40-50% of the field of view I have no idea why, it’s like you zoom in the middle of the picture all the way. It sucks!

2. The other major flaw with the camera is the focus range of the lens, the minimum focus distance is 3.3 ft (1m) and underwater becomes 4.4 ft (1.4m) that means you can’t hold the camera in your hand and shoot yourself, it will be out of focus especially under water. Macro is also nonexistent, just imagine, you have to be 3.3 ft from the object to have it focused. This really turns me off, even the old Iphone has a better lens the focus range with 9 inch to infinity!!!! Iphone 4’s camera beats this camera in every aspect.

3. the low light performance is very very bad, super noisy!

I think that this camera could have had a great potential but I feel deceived by Kodak, it’s not a true 1080p camera even though they market it that way, it’s a pure lie from their part, the good things about it are that it is waterproof and it shoots a decent 720p 60fps. I would return it if I could and wait until some other company comes out with a better product.

If you are looking for a toy camera you can use without worry that you could buy this camera, just don’t expect to much from it. Hope this helps other people not to be deceived by this product I only wish somebody would have written about this before I bought it.

Great for Special Vacations!

by jl1 from on 2010-09-03
I bought this for my new husband to take on our honeymoon to Hawaii for our wet/underwater adventures. It worked great! But first, the bad/needs improvement issues: There was only one problem that we had, after shooting some video, the system locked up and the recording seemed as if it wouldn’t stop. After a hard reboot (removing the battery to turn off, then restarting it), it worked fine and all the pics and video were still there. Of course, if you were underwater at the time something like this happened, it would be a much bigger problem. But, we used this device for the entire trip, and that was the only problem we had. The other thing that Kodak could improve upon is to add a tightener to the strap for the camera. It’s great they included a strap, but it is still quite loose, and if you are using the camera on a boat or while snorkeling like we were, it is most likely going to slip off your wrist at some point. We solved this problem by creating our own strap tightener with a hair band, however it would be nice if Kodak would address this easy to fix (and most likely extremely cheap to fix) issue.
That being said, the video quality is fantastic with this little guy. You DO have to be aware of how fast you are moving the camera while shooting a video, you have to keep it at a pretty slow, steady motion, but that is really to be expected, not sure why anyone would be surprised about that. The camera also takes really great outdoor and underwater still pictures. I would highly recommend this purchase to anyone who wants to capture really special trips. This is not a camera for every day usage (unless you happen to be underwater every day), but it is a must have for wet or underwater adventures!!!

Not Useful Without a Cord

by Steve Burdette from VA, USA on 2010-09-01
I have about 5 of these types of USB chargers laying around my house from iPods, droids, and other tech that has jumped on the USB charging craze. The kindle has the same type of charger as well. This thing feels like it’s going to snap in two when you hold it in your hand. It’s made from the cheapest plastic available and forget trying to use it on a wall outlet. You have to turn it upside-down and let the Flip sit on top of it but even then it looks like it’s going to peel from the wall or break. This is only useful if you have an additional USB extention cord which I highly recommend getting with the flip cam anyway. You can buy them here on amazon and they’re super cheap: USB 2.0 Extension Cable Type A Male to Type A Female 6 ft, Black The price is outragous for what you’re getting. Even at a discount I am not satisfied with this mediocre, poorly-thought-out charger.

For those trying to decide:

by lj from Charlotte, NC on 2010-05-22
For those that are trying to decide between a cheap one or one with the Flip name (as I did) let me help you. We recently purchased a Flip UltraHD camera and as most HDMI cables are the same, regardless of what the store says, I bought a cheap one to use to connect to the TV. It should have worked but it didn’t.

I couldn’t get it to recognize the camera. Anyway, long story short, I bought this cable and it works great.

Moral of the story: sometimes the name does matter.

Money well spent.

These cables are standard HDMI and will work with components that require these end connecters. I ordered them to connect my Canon EOS Rebel T2i DSLR to my Sony HDTV. Both picture and sound are transferred with superior quality.

Kodak Zi8 Worth the money? Yes it is…..

by CheapGeek from on 2010-09-06
This is not a 4000.00 camcorder.
It’s a pocket camcorder.
Good points
Shoots in HD
Editing software comes preloaded in camera.
Has Macro mode.
Good color balance.
Has more controls than just one big red button.
Image stabilization.
Looks good, feels good in the hand.
Standard tripod screw hole. 1/4″ 20 thread pitch.
Digital zoom, which is better than nothing.
Works fantastic on a tripod.
Easy video upload to the internets. Yes I added an “S” to internet.
SD Card up to 32 GB.
Here’s the best feature- IT HAS AN EXTERNAL MICROPHONE JACK!
You could actually use this for more than just stupid movie clips.
Caveat-Kodak is releasing a newer version of this camera that is about 1/2 as thick and about 1/2 as small.
You Will carry that camera every where.
Bad Point
The video is not as good as a $4000.00 camera.
But it’s not a $4000.00 camera now is it?
It’s dam* good for the money.
I would recommend it.

Kodak IZ8

by eric Chun from AUBURN, CA, US on 2010-09-05
I like the Kodak IZ8. Its worked out great in the studio to be able to connect studio grade mics and pres for great audio… pictures clear
on both 720p and 1080.. and the flexability to connect with USB and HDMI and RCA out very nice… I use both a stand up tripod, a home manufactured pole for horizontal and vertical stand up and a spyder small tripod for field… For the price and flexability, a great buy. It is what it is… Im a little nervous using the mic input with the wear and tear on the small 1/8″ adapter. The mics we use are all studio industry level xlr out so care has to be used when connecting the adapters to the mic in jack…also be aware of using the zoom in when indoor shooting and lighting is an issue… the light can change with the zoom and affect the picture…. otherwise a great buy for the dollar !

THECHNICALLY, it’s a camcorder…

by Anna from on 2010-08-31
So technically this IS a camcorder, however, I was greatly disappointed on many fronts – which I will address.

Firstly, I am a stay-at-home mom and I think that the way in which I was hoping to use this camera is the way that 90% of consumers will be using it. I wanted something that I could carry around and use to take quick videos of the kids and occasional pictures so that I would NOT have to carry around a separate small digital camera. I wasn’t expecting it to be like an $800 camera or anything, just simple and easy. Here are my issues:

Camcorder – It is a camcorder in the sense that it CAN take videos. HOWEVER, you have VERY limited features in taking said videos (and even less in pictures). The actual picture quality on the VIDEOS is wonderful. I have no complaint there whatsoever. My complaint is with the stabilization of the picture. Unless you have the camera on a tripod, your picture is going to be shaky. On playback (especially on a television) it actually makes you quite dizzy. If you happen to be walking while shooting video, forget it. You have to be as still as possible. There is an image stabilization setting (it’s either “off” or “on”) which is useless.

Still photos – This is where I have the biggest problem with this device. Here is what I expected: To just be able to get a clean image that can be viewed on a computer. No big deal. I know that there is no flash, fine – I’ll take my pictures in well-lit areas; I know that I don’t have ANY options for the lens (save landscape and macro mode) – fine I don’t need a professional image, just a normal picture. The problem is that any photo you take between 2-5 feet away is BLURRY! Actually, a better description is probably fuzzy. I took dozens of photos of my children – all of which looked fine on the tiny camera screen, but when I uploaded them onto the computer, they were completely useless! They look exactly like a picture taken with a cell-phone. All I want is a clean, clear image – nothing fancy. When I contacted Kodak (on the phone for 1 1/2 hours) they told me to turn on the EIS (which was already on) and then they told me that they didn’t know WHAT to tell me! I even e-mailed them 4 separate examples of my photos and do you know what they said?? This:

“…unfortunately this cannot be corrected by a repair. The Zi8 is a pocket video camera and its capability to capture still images is just an added feature on this video camera that other pocket camcorders does not have. The lens type of the Zi8 is limited to fixed focus only while the CCD total pixels is only 5.3 MP.”

So basically, they say that the quality of the camera is crummy. It’s funny because Kodak brags in all their descriptions about the still images like this: “Start bragging with amazing 5 MP, 16:9 widescreen HD still pictures”. All Kodak said to me was, “sorry, but if you need help in the future, let us know.” I NEED HELP NOW!

It’s disappointing because the video quality is great, but you just can’t watch them afterwards because it’s so shaky and obnoxious. The sill photos are useless UNLESS it’s a wide shot from 10 feet away or more. The things I loved about this camera were the fact that you could plug it straight into the computer and it could even charge that way; I love that you can use memory cards instead of internal memory like the Flip camera; I liked the accessories that it came with (cables to hook it up to the TV). I know that Kodak is coming out with another camera in September, but the description says that the still pictures are just 5MP just like their current models. Too bad. Maybe the picture stabilization will be better.

By the way, I was able to return it to Amazon so I’ll keep looking for a better product. Thank you Amazon!!!!

Sweet Little Pocket Video Camera!

by S. Zitofsky from on 2010-08-29
I am loving my refurbished Kodak zi8! I took it to the Grand Canyon where I used it for the first time. Admittedly, I hadn’t read the instructions prior to use (I received it and got on the plane), I found it somewhat difficult to navigate upon first use. I suggest reading the instruction manual to learn how to use it first! However, once I grasped the concept, I was able to easily use it to take fantastic video pictures. It also takes stills. It has its own USB cable tucked away, so it’s simple to upload video. The quality, even on the low settings, is excellent! It has image stabilization, too, a great feature to prevent shaky video. I bought my camera refurbished for well under $100 and it’s the way to go! My biggest complaint is that, as CNET review states, it shows fingerprints all over the camera, leaves smudges. But that’s a very minor con. It’s light weight, great battery life, and well worth the purchase (does HDMI, too)!! Love it. It is just what I wanted in a small, portable, hand held video camera.

I was looking for a pocket HD video recorder and this was the best value for money currently out in the market.I wish it had a little more zoom. But this meets my need.

Needs image stabilization

by Shopperholic from Copiague, NY United States on 2010-09-06
I am not sure why these cameras are so popular. I’m not tossing it in the Goodwill box, but I would not buy another.

Biggest con, no stabilization. I found the video to be waaaaay too jumpy.

But even when I’m not trying to use it on a boat, I love the fact that you can use regular AA batteries when the battery goes dead. This pro, however, is somewhat canceled out by lack of removable storage. If I could swap out batteries and memory cards I wouldn’t be tied to my laptop so much. I would like the ability to record in non-hd to maximize storage but if that’s an option I can’t find it.

And while the large lens looks great, the fact that it protrudes so much makes it a fingerprint magnet.

The included Flip-share software is pretty cool, I wish it had the capability to view and share video from other devices.

Battery does not charge

by Pickypicky from Massachusetts, USA on 2010-09-06
I would like to weigh in on the battery charging capability. I bought a Flip Video HD camera last December (so I have owned it about 8 months), and I have never managed to successfully charge the original battery pack through the USB connector attached to a computer, as it is supposed to do. For a while I resorted to using AA batteries all the time. Then recently I purchased the flip video power adapter. After hooking up the video camera to the power adapter and leaving it to charge overnight, the rechargeable battery pack still did not charge. I’m still trying to figure out which part of the equipment is faulty – whether it’s the battery or the camera. This has been a significant source of frustration and has caused me to avoid using the camera. I think it is too late for me to return it (though I think I will look at the manufacturer’s warranty now), but I would like to advise anyone else who has this charging issue straight out of the box to return the product for a refund.

Filming Review

by Willy from on 2010-09-06
This camera is great for filming a show if you want to put it on the internet or your family if you want to remember a fun day or even a road trip. It is one of the easiest cameras I have been exposed to. You push a button to turn it on and you point it at the thing you want to film and press another button to film. That’s it! And transferring it to your computer is super easy too. Just make sure to transfer the video into another folder before renaming it. Tip! If you need a cheap, easy-to-use camera, get this one.

looks cheap, display too small, barely any zoom function

by Inga from San Diego, CA United States on 2010-09-06
i sent this cam back for a refund.
the video on my iphone 4 is by far superior
you can hardly zoom in
it looks really cheesy
display is way too small
very simple to use though, maybe suitable for young kids or the elderly
invest in a flash cam or a good smartphone instead

Not as good as I’d hoped

by Ele from North Carolina on 2010-09-05
I decided on this based on other reviews. I wasn’t looking for fabulous playback, but didn’t expect the poor results I got. Playback is fuzzy in both high and low lighting environments – in fact, my digital camera takes better movies. The only redeeming quality to this is the software that allows you to pull stills out and save them as photos. You can get some very nice pictures this way. Not high quality, but still nice.

A good little camera for non demanding situations.

by Richard J. Kalwaic from Philadelphia, PA on 2010-08-28
This is a fine camera for those who need to have a little something handy for ordinary regular light shots and have little room other than a pocket or purse. The stills are adequate and videos are not bad. Don’t expect professional quality with lots of bells and whistles. My only caution is in selecting a case. Sony sells a bloggie case online. Don’t get that one! It’s too small. There’s another one slightly larger that fits. Charging almost certainly requires a usb port such as on a computer. Unless I’m mistaken, there’s no way to plug it into an outlet, at least without getting extra cables, I think.

Very good…. as expected.

by Judy Koo from on 2010-08-28
I ordered this to take videos on our trip and it’s really good. It’s easy to use and the image quality is very good as well. I don’t know how the image quality of this camera would compare to other expensive ones. But for less than 200 dollars, I think this is really a good buy. Plus, it’s light and handy too. I take one star away because of the way it’s designed. It’s a little awkward sometimes the way you hold this video camera. I often have to use the other hand to turn on or off the recording button. For other video cameras I used before, I can use the same hand I hold the camera to turn on and off the recording button.

Bought this to propose to my future wife

by Dave C. – Virginia Beach from on 2010-08-25
I purchased this little camera for one reason. I needed something to fit in my pocket so I could pull it out and propose to my girlfriend when the time was right. The right time was in Disney World when we stopped next to Cinderella’s Castle around midday. I said, “let’s do a video recap of the day for the vacation video.” and then preceeded to hold the camera in one hand while pulling out the ring with the other while balancing on one knee.

The great thing about this camera is that it takes a memory stick as big as you’re willing to spend on it. My 32 Gig SD card holds roughly 14 hours worth of video. This is a big plus when you’re running around Disney World for 5 days. Similar cameras that have internal memory are locked at about 1 to 2 hours of footage and you need to empty the camera.

The camera itself creates very high quality images. The different resolutions and frame rates allow you to pick and choose based on the action in front of you AND the lighting.

720 @ 30 fps – this is great for low light situations. I recorded some interior stuff at the other settings and the light information got a lot lower. I think it must have something to do with less strain on the capturing of twice the information allows the camera to concentrate on bumping the exposure.

720 @ 60 fps – This is my favorite for bright and outdoor situations. The video moves like butter. However, if you have an unsteady hand, plan on bouncing. This setting has no image stablizing.

1080p @ 30 – It’s honestly the setting I use least. The picture is very nice, but the files are pretty big and I think I prefer the slightly smaller image better.

The camera bag i chose was a small digital camera bag by Swiss Army. It hold the camera snug and has just enough space for an extra battery. The camera case was small enough that I was able to keep it in the large pocket on my cargo shorts. This was a big plus because we didnt’ have to go through security to “Check All Bags.”
YES, buy an EXTRA BATTERY. You can shoot 5-10 minute clips for 4 or 5 hours, but it’s always good to play it safe.

Oh yeah. She said yes.

Bloggie

by Dutchess from Manhattan on 2010-07-15
I am so glad I purchased the Bloggie! It takes fantastic pictures, wonderful videos and what I like most about it is, once you download the video, you can actually pick a scene from the video and turn it into a picture!! I love how easy and fun it is to share the video and pictures on Facebook or my Blog. My father said that it’s really simple and quick to download the videos that I send to his email address as well. I recommend this product to anyone. I would also like to say that the battery life is exemplary as well. I recommend the hard shell protector case to go with this product.

Please Read: Battery Issues

by GZ from on 2010-08-03
I would call this a ‘toy camcorder’. One is not able to adjust settings in any significant way; there is no optical zoom, the video quality is so-so etc. If you are seriously interested in the UltraHD, you are probably already aware of these issues. If ease of use is your main criteria then this unit may be for you.

If you plan on buying this be aware that many people including myself have had major issues with the ‘re-chargeable’ batteries. I went through two sets of batteries and used a Flip charger without registering a proper charge. It is easy enough to use standard AA batteries with the camera. You can also buy rechargeable batteries, but you’ll have to charge these externally.

Pass On This Item

by Diego Raigoza Nuñez from Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico on 2010-07-26
At first glance the Flip Battery Pack may seem like a good item to get along with your new Flip videocamera, but take my word for it, it’s not.

The original idea and intent of being able to charge your camera’s batteries with your computer while on the go or while downloading videos to your computer is a good one, the execution of such idea was poorly done.

Unfortunately, this product suffers due to the design flaws of the Flip videocamera (In my case I own the Flip Ultra HD) and flaws of the battery itself.

The battery is a pair of Ni-Mh AA batteries wrapped together in plastic along with a proprietary pair of edges on the top that lock the battery in place inside the camera. While this is good, it also means you can not charge the battery pack OFF the camera. It has to be inside the camera no matter what.

One huge flaw of this battery is the required charging time; 6 hours. This wouldn’t be too much of a problem if I could charge it on any battery recharger, but since you can’t do that, you got to stick the battery in the camera and the camera to the USB port of your computer and HOPE it charges.

The problem here is that unless you work 12 hours a day on your computer or the computer is on 24/7, you will never be able to sit there long enough to charge the battery completely. You could try leaving the computer on for 6 hours doing nothing so the battery can recharge, but I find that a colossal waste of energy and a huge crime against the environment.

But wait, here comes the icky part…

Even if you sit there for 6 hours or you leave the computer on so the battery recharges, there is NO WAY to guarantee that will happen.

Why not? Because the camera overheats at some point and cancels the recharge (I’m guessing so the camera and the battery won’t explode). The infamous overheating problem that most of us Flip users suffer from is NOT a battery problem, its a camera problem.

I’ve got two pairs of these battery packs and more than once I’ve been charging one, the camera would stop charging after a short while due to heat. I would swap the batteries so the cold pair would charge, the camera wouldn’t even think about it, it would still claim things are too hot. It was until the camera itself cooled off that would resume charging, but for me this mean: unplugging the camera from the computer and placing it under cool air or let it cool down on its own. This is just too much fuzz to charge a simple pair of batteries.

With that problem, this item is just as useless as DSLR battery that will last you for one shot.

Usually, I would charge the batteries by removing the lid that covers them and plugging the camera on some USB slot away from the netbook’s fan, but since I live in a hot place as it is, the camera just won’t charge for long.

I read in some reviews of this item to peel off the plastic on the bottom poles and that would take care of it. I did that with one pair and it didn’t work, it is a camera problem.

After a concert I wanted to record turned into a disaster due to the fact that the batteries didn’t charge completely and I had to keep switching between batteries, I decided to retire the two pairs I own of these type of battery packs.

Flip really screwed up here, they should have either made the batteries compatible with any battery charger or sell you a decent battery charger for these that you can plug to the wall. I know they got an external battery charger that goes into the wall socket, but it has to be on a very precise position to charge and the design is just not practial, it’s so easy to knock off the wall.

My advice is to pass on this item and just buy a couple of pairs of rechargeable batteries (Energizer, Duracell, Eneloop) that you can charge in any charger. The recharging time will be shorter (even if it takes 6 hours, you can leave them charging at night and they will surely be charged by morning) and will be easier to do. Not to mention you won’t have to waste as much energy as you need to do by leaving your computer on for 6 hours. Unless you live in a really cold place, you’ll be lucky to be able to charge these batteries completely the way Flip wants you to. If you live in a cold place, do yourself and nature a favor and use a normal battery recharger with normal rechargeable batteries anyway. Nothing justifies the huge waste of resources that charging these batteries entail.

An inexpensive, no-brainer accessory for your Flip Camera

by John Llama from 03784 on 2010-08-31
The Underwater case for the Flip UltraHD is a great accessory for the Flip camera, for anyone going to the beach, with a pool, or who just wants to goof around with underwater video. The case is watertight, lightweight and has a useful strap. It also works well in the ocean. I even bought one for my brother.

Great product! Works like a charm!

My husband &I have brought this underwater case with our Flip Video to Schliterbahn Waterpark on ALL the Waterslides, snorkeling in the Caribbean at Grand Cayman Islands, swimming casually in pools, swimming & rappelling down waterfalls, and snorkeling off the coast of Mexico at Majahuitas. The case helps protect the camera and does a great job underwater.

As advertised…

by zrclshn from on 2010-08-27
I used this item snorkeling on our honeymoon in Mexico. It performed as it was advertised. I was able to take video (including video of a 5 foot barracuda) without any damage to the camera.

Pros:
Easy to use
Does not leak
Fits the camera perfectly

Cons:
Like all underwater camera cases … they float (kind of a pain when swimming down to see things on the bottom)

Unknown:
Did not do any scuba diving, so I cannot attest to it at any depths (I had it at maybe 14′ at the most)

Awesome product

Just came back from Cancun. By leaving my full size video camera home, I borrowed a Flip camera from my friend that, I am glad, came with this underwater case. My family had a wonderful time at Xel-Ha with many unforgettable videos. Thanks for the Flip and this underwater case. I am sure I will get one for myself.
