Good snapshot camera, sometimes slow

by Factor Jota from Seatte, WA USA on 2010-09-05
This is a nice camera to have as a point-and-shoot. The AA bateries instead of charger can have its pros and cons.. the major advantages (to me) are:
1. No need for a charger. One less thing to worry about and keep track of.
2. If the battery goes empty in the middle of the day, AA batteries are available everywhere (or you can take a spare couple).
If you want to save on batteries, you can always get rechargeable ones.

The main dislike about this camera is that sometimes it takes a (really) long time to take the shot. Not sure why as I also have one other similar model (Nikon Coolpix S220) and it doesn’t take half as long. This causes quite a bit of frustration and in my opinion, Nikon gets its brand detiriorated more than it saves money.

Still, a nice camera, especially for people who don’t know much about which settings to use and just want to use the one button to take shots.

Great everyday camera

by D. Wright from Chicago, IL United States on 2010-09-05
My Coolpix L22 goes everywhere with me. It’s small enough to fit in a pocket, and with 12Mp I can crop and enlarge more of the photos.
I love the size and for some reason more of my photos are really sharp.

Great value

This camera is easy to use with a decent amount of features. It has HD picture quality and was a great value for the price.

Got what I wanted at this price

by Morris Luk from on 2010-08-26
If you are on a very very tight budget (air ticket took the most part of my budget already) and don’t want to pay anything over $100, this is the camera for this price. Below is my feedback after taking a couple of hundred pictures in a trip to Hong Kong.

Pros:
-low price
-pictures are of good quality (12mega) and over 95% of them were in good focus and clear. I printed about 150 pics (including Disney World in HK) on photo paper thru PhotoMax in Hong Kong for Mom in law and they came out very well. They look good on computer too.
-took about 10 video clips. They all worked well on computer when replaying (the camera does not have HD format support yet in its video).
-use AA batteries (I know some people do not like this as it makes the camera a little bigger – anyway just a little bigger only and OK with me) but I like it because if the battery runs out by accident and I have no replacement handy, I can purchase anywhere easily. BTW, I had 4 rechargeable AA batteries and this camera took 2 at a time and so most of the time I did not run into the need to buy new battery. You can take a lot of pics with just 2 batteries. The only one time we had to purchase new batteries was because we forgot to bring the other 2 batteries out and the ones in use ran out. This is much better than when a camera is using other type of batteries and you forgot to bring them out and you won’t be able to use your camera in that case at all.
-flash is OK

Cons:
-the mode that has face detection just does not work. If you use that mode, the pictures you got would be extremely extremely disappointing and that’s why some other reviews here said that the pictures from this camera were very poor and this was because they probably have selected that mode. If you stay away from using that and select other mode, the picture would come out just fine. With that said, you are not really getting all the features that you pay for here. Even this camera is cheap, the price per each working function may be more expensive than the others. But too bad, I cannot spend more than $100 for a camera in my budget and so I have to stick with it (still better than not being able to get a camera at all).
-the sports mode is only 1/250th second and its much slower than most of other camera (1/1000th second).

So if you cannot afford more than $100 like me and you only care about taking reasonable good pictures easily (no sports – sports mode is slow), this may be the right camera for you. If you can spend more than $100, you should check out something else and you can get better sports mode and higher zoom power, etc.

Hope this helps.

Would return it if I could

by Devon from on 2010-08-26
I needed a new camera that was a s easy to use as my old Canon. I read up on this camera and felt it was a user friendly, good quality camera. I’m finding that its very slow to make it available to snap another picture and a lot of time, the pictures have come out very fuzzy. I would not recommend this camera. Even though I can’t return it, I think I will buy another camera. Always remember, you get what you pay for. If its cheap in price, its probably cheap in quality

Not so much an action tripod

by southern boy from los angeles, ca on 2010-09-03
The word “action” in the name is misleading. I have strapped the tripod to my bike, my helmet, my arm, my bag, my rack, everything, and the picture is extremely jumpy and shaky. This seems like a great tripod for securing your camera to something that is stabilized, but it is far from being an “action” tripod. I ride my bike on roads and even on the smoothest asphalt, the image is jumpy. This could be a design flaw in the camera for not having some kind of internal stabilizer, but since this tripod is made by the same company that makes the camera you would think they would have somehow figured all of this out.

Works great has limits

by Miles Gwyn from Las Vegas, NV on 2010-08-18
I really like this tripod, The action mount it is a lot bulkier than another version that flip had produced. The tripod legs make this harder to mount in tight spaces and the plastic bits don’t absorb shock at all so be careful if you want to use on something like a bike or skate board. For the price it is good and still versatile.

Shaky

by stephenghowe from Frederick, MD USA on 2010-06-14
I’ve tried making videos with a bicycle helmet and a Flip Ultra. Using a little foam rubber between the helmet and the stand, I can strap down the base tightly. The plastic is flexy, Flips are elongated and don’t have image stabilization, so videos shake even when things are not particularly rough. VirtualDub and the Deshake plugin do a surprisingly good job of mitigating the shake and rolling shutter jello, although with reduced quality and black edges. I like the design, hopefully it will be improved: a little metal here and there would help. A Flip standing on top of a helmet looks terrible; the Amazon pictures artfully minimize this (by placing it at the front of the helmet, extending the arm downward, and photographing the edge, not the face, of the Flip).

Spend a little more and get a lot more

by Bill from Pittsburgh on 2009-11-18
I loved this tripod for what looks like (and are) very stable legs, which are yet easy to extend. The trouble I had was the fluid head. As the previous review states, there’s a little “backward motion” on pans (meaning, when you stop panning and release the handle, the head pans back slightly in the opposite direction). I also noticed this for tilts. I didn’t want to spend more so really messed with the various adjustments, but never got it to be as smooth as more expensive ones I’ve used (borrowed) in the past. Also, the head pan lock never loosened up enough, so if it was on a hard wood or ceramic floor, I had to hold the legs else the entire tripod would spin in the direction I was trying to pan. It would not loosen up enough. I returned it and got a Manfrotto / Bogen for about $130 more. Good luck!

Worth twice the price

by Kevin from on 2009-08-28
I trembled as I placed my order for this, as I could not find a single review online. It arrived yesterday and it is an incredibly solid tripod. I used this for my Panisonic AG-HMC70 shoulder-cam. I have used other video tripods before. My problem was, when zoomed in from the back of a 60 foot long (+/-) room and while panning back and forth to follow my subject on stage, the tripod was a bit shaky. When zoomed the shake was amplified on the video, making post-production a cleanup nightmare. I wanted something solid.

THIS TRIPOD IS SOLID AND STEADY!

The combination of the ball head and bubble-level allow you to level the entire head by slightly loosening and retightening one knob. The legs release and tighten very quickly and smoothly. When fully extended the camera stands tall enough to shoot over a seated crowd, or most normal sized people. I am 6′3″ and the viewfinder on the camera is above my head – when the legs are fully extended.

The quick release for the camera mount is solid when locked in place. I have no worries about walking between locations with the tripod over my shoulder – with the legs folded and the camera mounted. The mechanisms for locking the pan and tilt actions require very little movement to loosen them up for smooth movement, or to tighten them back down. When they are tightened down – they hold solid and firm. Fully loaded my camera weighs just under 10 pounds. This tripod is rated at over 30 pounds and I can believe it would handle such a load. The hydraulics are brilliant, providing very steady and controlled panning and tilting action with no jitters.

The one con, and I’ve noticed this will all video tripods I’ve used is this… when I pan a shot, say my subject is moving from my right to my left, and I stop the pan as my subject stops and holds his/her position, if I let go of the tripod handles, there is a “slight” movement back to the right. This is very slight, almost unnoticeable, unless I am using a zoom factor of 3x or more.

If you are thinking about buying this tripod … just do it. You will not be sorry.

Great Deal

by J. Ambrose Little from Central NJ USA on 2010-09-04
I’m a total n00b in the photography hobby, but this looked like a good deal. It was! I was happy to be the envy of my more experienced photography hobbyist friends.

As far as I can tell, it has all the right features, it looks nice, is super lightweight, and it’s easy to use. I am ordering another one for my office.

Not perfect, but a great value.

by A. Bruckse from on 2010-09-04
I’ve used this tripod for 8 months now, and I am quite surprised in how well it has held up. If it wasn’t for that, I would probably give it 3 stars though.

Fit and finish is quite nice, even when compared to the true pro-quality tripods. As expected, the ball head isn’t perfect, but is actually pretty nice for the money; But the mount/seat (more specifically, the female threads of the mount/seat) are not of great quality, so you may find a little extra movement after a lot of use. I remedied this with some Loktite and a bit more torque on the hex stud that goes through the ball. Being made out of aluminum, it is nice and light, but a little too light for confident use at full extension… I am always within reach of the camera when using this tripod. The leg locks are on the cheap side (no surprise there), but function well.

Overall, it’s actually a pretty decent tripod for the money, but don’t expect greatness if you plan on using more than occasionally.

If your a total beginner to photography, this tripod would probably work well for you. But if you are at a higher experience level, save your money.

Awesome for the money!

by Valdeeez from on 2010-09-04
I have been using this tripod for almost a year and I have no complaints. There are much better products out there but none that compare to this one for the price. I would highly recommend this to a non-professional photographer looking for a decent tripod!

really great, except the ballhead knob.

by Rhea Harvard from on 2010-08-23
This tripod has everything I wanted. Very sturdy and light, like a professional version, but inexpensive. I really love this product.

But, the knob part of ballhead needs some improvement. I have to constantly screw and release it to adjust the angle of my camera during shooting, but the end of the knob does not hold the end and easily comes out and falls down. Actually I lost my knob on my first trip with the tripod.
Dolica customer service was very kind enough to promise they would send a now ballhead if I send my ballhead. I’m really impressed by the service, but it looks like it’s going to take more than 2 weeks anyway. I’m still waiting for the new one…

Other than that, I recommend this tripod.

Good Bye San Disk

by Della M. Robinson from on 2010-08-29
Having been a San Disk fan for a number of years I am now replacing all my other cards with these. They are built super tough and reliable! I have dropped them in mud, exposed to strong heat and cold and they work without flaws. They also Move my files fast. I shoot full RAW on a Canon 50D and I know a big difference over the San Disk Extreme 3’s The rescue disk works like a charm also. I took some junk pics and reformatted the disk and was able to recover them. Not that I really wanted to, but it’s nice to know I can if something like that ever happens to real photos that I do want to keep. From now on I only use Lexar Professional cards

An excellent product

by Radu Chiorean from Cluj-Napoca, România on 2010-08-10
I bought the first time in this store, at first I had some delays, but everything went very well. I got the time ordered product and the price was ok. Excellent price / performance / quality. I bought one and I’m sure May will take one soon. It’s the best alternative to the series Extreme IV / Ducati (for that money). An excellent product, fast and stable.

Lexar 8GB, Professional 300X, UDMA CF card

by Michael W. OBrien from Valley Head, Alabama on 2010-06-23
I bought this Lexar UDMA CF card several weeks ago for use with my new Canon EOS 7D camera, after reading revues on the card on Amazon. Reviews on the camera also recommended a UDMA card for maximum performance by the camera. Works great, and is an incredibly fast CF card. I do mostly nature photography especially butterflies and dragonflies. This card writes as fast as I can trigger the shutter on my EOS 7D, which can be several times per second. This type of photography, at times, requires multiple photos to be taken in order to get a few that meet the stringent criteria for sharpness, positioning, lighting etc. This card works great and I’m ordering a second one today. FYI, the EOS 7D is an incredible camera too.

Best External Storage Drive You Can Buy in 2010

by Scott from Northern Virginia on 2010-09-01
I have owned several external hard drives throughout the years from Western Digital and Seagate, and this 2TB Iomega drive blows them all away. It is totally plug and play if you are running Windows 7. No software install required. And if you hook it up using eSATA, it is faster than Firewire – blazing fast. It is funny that the original makers of the Iomega ZIP drive finally got the external hard drive right. This is a no-brainer. If you have a good PC with Windows 7 and you are looking for ultimate storage in an external drive that performs well, is simple to use, and is damn fast, then just buy this.

It is the backup software which remains a strongpoint besides the eSATA factor. I have now registered for a warranty of 3 years.

Problem-free product, have used Lexar exclusively for years now

by Mark Alsip from Kentucky, USA on 2010-07-25
Lexar professional cards were the first ones I found on the shelf when I bought my first digital DSLR in 2007 and I’ve stuck with them since then since they’ve been relatively problem free. Out of the 10 pro series cards I own, I received one strange error message from my camera about a “write problem” but it was a one-off thing that never reoccurred and I’m not so sure that wasn’t the camera’s fault. I cycle through the 10 cards in order as I shoot, just part of my normal workflow, and the performance on each has been consistently fast in both my Nikon D70s and Nikon D300s. And, always a consideration, I’ve been able to find the cards reasonably priced both online and at local camera stores.

I own 8GB, 4GB, and 2GB Lexar pro cards. I stick with the 8GB cards in the D300s because of the camera’s high FPS ability. With the camera’s buffering capability and the speed of the 8GB pro card I’ve yet to experience the slightest delay in continuous shooting at high shutter speeds.

No real problems with these, would recommend to anybody looking for consistent, reliable performance.

Quick & reliable

by E. Sieben from Colorado, USA on 2010-04-26
This card is quick and reliable. I bracket several different exposures on my landscapes and never had to wait for the card. Lexar makes quality memory products so I don’t worry about missing a shot. Affordable, reliable and quick…can’t ask for more than that from your compact flash cards!

Buyer Beware

by Photo Artist from St. Charles, MO on 2010-04-15
I bought the card for a planned birding trip to Louisiana. Today was the highlight of the trip … spent 3 hours at St. Martin’s Rookery and an hour at the Jefferson Island Rookery. Then the card failed!!! Lexar’s recovery software was unable to recover any of the shots … 660 shots are gone! And I’m now 2 hours away. I’m sick.

Great card, good value

by B. Sheesley from on 2009-11-05
So far this card has performed great. My wife mostly shoots weddings and portraits and this card has worked great for her, and we will consider purchasing additional Lexar cards in the future. The processing speed of the card is perfect and at 8Gb it allows you to capture a lot of pictures without having to change cards. So if you want a great CF card at a good value try one of these.

More than Disappointed

Lexar LCF8GBDRBNA233 8GB Professional 233x CompactFlash Card

Excited to have the new lexar card, thrilled about its speed, and even loved the look of the card but, it failed in 2 months. I noticed one split photo on the card at the end of a shoot. I tested the card a couple more times and it was gone.
Shooting at a rate of about 1,000 a week for clients I need reliability even more than speed.
I own 13 San Disk cards of which none have failed in 5 years.

Decent system for a mid end product.

by M. watson from dallas, tx on 2010-08-11
Just purchased this and like the small size and clip on and total portability. also like that you can monitor the sound coming into the camcorder. Sound quality is excellent when there is no competing sounds and is within 40 feet. Saw another product for 1/3 as much but required to be plugged in to work (the main system not the clip on which was on battery power). My biggest complaint is that it tends to fade at about 60 feet away. I was hoping for the signal to be a bit stronger till about 100 feet. It’s not professional quality but selection at this price was slim. Recommend it? Yes, for a short range interview or public speaking use.

Solid product-works just as stated. Lack of stereo could pose a problem for some, but was expected.

Sony Wireless Mic RF Interference

by B. Hallatt from Canada on 2009-03-04
I recently purchased a 900MHz SONY Wireless Mic system (Model WCS-999) which works exceptionally well at home, very clear without any RF Radio Frequency Interference noise. However when I use it at work it doesn’t not perform well due to RFInterference. I assume caused by the many electronic devices such as computers and high power loads and circuits nearby. If you buy this product you might want to ensure you are not near many elctronic loads or high power electrical loads which might cause reception problems. I found I couldn’t use the mic as intended for capture audio sund while taping video.

Outstanding Product

I use the Sony WCS999 Wireless Camcorder Microphone in my classes for student presentations and it exceeds my expectations. It eliminates background noise and I am able to hear the student who is presenting when I play back the tape. Outstanding product.

Awesome! Works great with my camcorder

by Jeffrey Heaton from St. Louis, MO on 2008-12-08
I’ve used other products in the $200-$300 range and have never gotten the results I was looking for. This does just fine. The 900mhz signal is very good and does not distort. Your camera person can listen in using a headphone. Plus, there is an additional “mix” port on the receiver. You can actually plug two of these together for an interview setup, with no additional hardware needed. Make sure your camcorder has a mic input. Also, if your camcorder requires a powered mic, this works fine. I hope to upload a video review soon to show the quality.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1SLRPIUTTCJ49 This external HDD offers the great benefit of having 4 interfaces as it’s name would suggest. If you are transferring files from computer to computer this comes in handy as you will always be able to transfer your data at the fastest possible rate.

A cinch to set up – a great product

This could not have been any easier to set up, and the amount of extra storage I now have is unbelievable.

Garbage! Would never buy again!

by Smack, Inc. from Georgia on 2010-04-07
I purchased 4 of these units new at the same time. Upon receiving them in 2 different shipments one was defective and returned. After talking with the company on several different occasions they refused to send a new unit, and instead sent a refurbished one. I could have purchased a refurbished one cheaper to start with.
Since purchasing several months ago, I have had 2 others crash/lock up. Multiple conversations with technical support have proved useless and even more frustrating. Out of the 5 drives that I have had, one came defective, 2 have crashed, and one more has crashed today. Being a professional photographer and having to depend on storage units, this is NOT one I would recommend.

Crunching Sounds Are Fine in A Cereal, Not An External Hard Drive

by D. Guberman from on 2010-04-03
Yes, the hard drive installed easily on my PC. It worked noiselessly – for just over a month. Since then, it has started making a crunching noise when operating that I can only assume means an approaching demise and my ownership of a Verbatim brick after just a month’s ownership.

Fantastic Multiple Interface Product

The Verbatim 1TB Quad-Interface drive has a lot of usability. I researched a lot on what was available when I decided to purchase. I predominantly use the eSATA II port for backup up data, as I do not and will not leave this drive spinning for prolonged periods of time (you could called it obsessive compulsive). The drive is moderately quiet. When I am using my laptop, it can barely be heard over the exhaust fan at medium load, and that is quite a nice feature. It can be loud when writing data (and especially while being encrypted) as the platters begin to spin. I will also go ahead and warn the user that this drive sucks up QUITE a bit of power for its specs, particularly while transferring data via eSATA. It does have a bit of a crackling noise when sharing an outlet, and that was with my laptop, Verbatim drive, and speakers (which at the time were not under any load) in the same socket. I would, if possible, dedicate this drive to its own socket; it will prolong the life and has the potential to be much more quiet. Otherwise, the data transfers fast and it also comes with Nero BackItUp 4, which is a neat little feature to have if you aren’t specific in what files you’d like to have backed up. With Nero, you can change the settings to do it every week, month, time the drive is plugged in, etc. It also generates little heat even though it a fan. The holes on the top and bottom serve in the fan’s place, and function fantastically. I have felt the drive under load (while writing approx. 150 gigs of data via eSATA at full load) and it was lukewarm at most.

Build quality is top-notch. The drive is VERY solid and comes with a standard power cable. That’s very nice in case you were to lose it. Comes with a Firewire 400, Firewire 800, USB 2.0, eSATA and Firewire 400/800 split cables. It also looks nice on a desk, as it is sleek, sexy, and honestly, discrete. The value cannot be beaten as far as build quality, drive quality (it is a Hitachi 7200RPM SATA), features, and overall price point. If you’re looking for high storage, this cannot be beat.
