Advertised load capacity too optimistic

by D. P. Schroeder from Amidst the Carolinas on 2010-08-22
This seems to be a reasonable ball head for the price if you stick to very lightweight cameras — even more lightweight ones than the product specs suggest.

Using the Giotto’s 3/8 inch socket by taking out the 1/4 inch bushing, mounting this diminutive head on my Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod Legs (Black) gives me just barely under 2 turns of threading, which is solid enough for most point-n-shoots on this, admittedly, overkill tripod for such a purpose.

Mounting the head to my Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ4K 8.1MP Digital Camera with 10x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black) gives me almost exactly 2 turns; to my Fujifilm Finepix F70EXR 10MP Super CCD Digital Camera with 10x Optical Dual Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD, over 2 1/2 turns; and, in a pinch, to my Nikon D60 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera Black Gold Special Edition (Body Only), just over 2 1/4 turns. I have no idea how long the threads will last, but all of these connections are well within the sturdy range.

My only negative observation is that the advertised load capacity for this ball head is overly optimistic: this is fine for point-n-shoots, but when I have grabbed this in a pinch for my Nikon D60 with a lightweight lens, the mount is anything but steady, even on the Manfrotto, even though the total weight of the camera, lens (a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, battery, card, and camera strap weigh in at ONLY 2lbs, 1oz — less than HALF of the Giotto’s advertised “load capacity” of 4.4lbs. It holds together, but just barely, and it’s a bit wobbly. I know this product is not designed for a DSLR, but shouldn’t any product perform steadily at _under half_ of its advertised load capacity?

Just in the odd case that someone would consider getting this mount for the Manfrotto tripod mentioned above, I’d recommend against it — the thumbscrew on the ball head is so close to the wide base of the ball-head mounting surface on the Manfrotto and is so short, that it’s quite difficult to tighten. I haven’t noticed that problem mounting the Giotto to quick-releases on cheaper tripods, though.

My complaint is that the effective weight rating for this product appears to be under half of what it advertises.

Great micro ball head

by Elyone from Ohio on 2010-07-31
This head is great for flashes and other accessories. I have 2 of them for holding my flashes when in “studio mode”.
It’s not meant for cameras, not really. But for a micro head, they are the best.

Works as advertised

by S. Frink from Woodstock, GA, US on 2010-07-31
Added to an articulated clamp, this product gives another 90+ degrees of articulation for mounting a camera from above.

Light weight ball head for P/S cameras

by Lawrence W. Stephens from on 2010-07-28
I bought this head for my wife’s camera. It holds camera nice and tight. It is quick to remove and put on. As my wife is gentile with her things so this will last a long time. It feels like you could over tighten the head and stripe the threads as it just keeps getting tighter and tighter. I have an all chrome, metal, 35 year old Made in Japan head I have used for years. This is light weight in comparison. It holds the camera without slipping.
The minuses:
Do watch out for the threads as they might be a little short for some cameras. Long enough for all my cameras except for a cheap plastic one I have.
The head has a rough texture. I often use the head to scan a shot with video and use the head loose just to steady camera. Not as smooth as my old ball head.
5 stars for what you get for price but 4 stars for what it is. Because I did not want to spend $20 or more for a ball head for a $14 monopod, I give it 5 stars.

Strong, any position

by Tom D from Columbus, OH United States on 2010-07-17
It locks tight with the single thumb screw, any position. The 3/8 inch optional bottom screw is the reason I bought this. (It comes with an adapter bushing for 1/4″ X 20 as well. I mounted this on the end of a triple extension pole that puts my camera about 23′ in the air. Most of the time I position the camera, set the timer, tilt the pole up and align it in time for the shutter delay. That’s a lot of swinging around and this locks in place and holds every time. Great little ball head camera mount.

Pretty solid

by M. Owens from germany on 2010-09-02
I don’t know what others are complaining about on this, maybe I’m just used to cheap, home-use tripods because this is certainly the nicest tripod I’ve ever had. The positive reviews seem pretty accurate – strong sturdy legs that extend very smoothly. I think it pans nicely until it reaches the tightened point at which you can’t turn it any further. The tilt is manageable but definitely not awesome – hence only four stars… (But what can I say I’m just getting ready to start out a semi-pro side-gig and didn’t wanna break the bank – especially if it doesn’t work out for one reason or another, and so went with the best equipment I could afford)

Great for the price!

by Kin Kwan from on 2010-08-25
.:BACKGROUND:.

Hello, in order for you to find this review useful, I feel like I should give you some background info of myself. I’m a film student and I was looking for a tripod with these requirements [in order of importance]:

1) Inexpensive.
2) Fluid Head that allows me to do smooth panning/tilting with ease.
3) Sturdy enough to last me a few years and through rigorous shoots.

I’m lucky enough to have experienced with a lot of different types of equipment through my school, which enables me to compare the the Ravelli tripod to the other tripod brands I’ve used (mainly Manfrottos).

.:PACKAGING/SHIPPING:.

The tripod arrived promptly and was securely packaged. Everything had its wrapper so it didn’t look used. However, I did notice a few very noticeable scratch marks on the tripod handle and on the tripod itself. I haven’t contacted Amazon/CheetahMounts about it yet since it doesn’t seem to affect the tripod’s performance, but it does look as if it’s a refurbished/used model.

Pics of scratches:
[...]

.:ACCESSSORIES:.

The bag that it comes with feels a bit cheap, because the material is really thin, but it does get the job done. It has two different straps for you to carry either with your hands (like a briefcase) or on your shoulder (like a messenger bag).

Picture of tripod with included bag:
[...]

The tripod also came with a mini tripod (!) which I wasn’t expecting! It’s basically for compact digicams, and it does have extendable legs which raises up to about 7 or so inches.

There’s also a backup camera plate.

.:QUALITY:.

The tripod is really well built. From what I can see/feel, they used mainly metal and only rubber/plastic for the handles and the feet. The tripod feels really solid, but not too heavy or bulky. The camera mount also feels really sturdy. Overall, the construction is very good, but mine did come with some scratches and scrapes as noted above.

.:PERFORMANCE:.

Like what the other reviewers have said, the fluid head is pretty stiff (even when the pan/tilt is loosened all the way). During certain pan/tilt movements, if you don’t hold the tripod down, you may end up lifting one of the legs off the ground. This usually happens when I try to tilt from the lowest point to the highest point or vice versa. If you use your spare hand to hold one of the legs down, it isn’t a big problem. Now, the head itself is very smooth. As you pan/tilt, you won’t feel any bumps/jerks or sudden increase/decrease in resistance, but it does take some effort to keep a constant speed when panning compared to pricier tripods. It’s easier to keep a tilt at a constant speed than panning, but I’m not sure if that’s the tripod or just me.

The legs are made of metal and should be sturdy enough if your camera stays within the weight limit Ravelli suggests. The locking mechanism is a big knob which makes locking/releasing your legs
quick and easy.

.:PERFORMANCE TEST:.

The video I’m linking is made with the Ravelli Tripod so you can get a sense of what you can do with it. I made the video after owning the camera for about a week, so you can probably get better results with more practice.

I used the rubber band technique for all of the movements which I recommend for anyone who has a cheap tripod. Basically, you wrap a rubber band on the tripod handle and use it to maneuver the tripod rather than the handle itself. The rubber band should help eliminate some of the jerkiness.

Link to [...]

.:CONCLUSION:.

For its price, I would definitely say it’s 5 stars. The fluid head is not perfect, but with some practice and the rubber band technique, you can still perform some amazingly smooth camera moves. It’s also solid enough to last me a few years until I’m ready to upgrade, and even then, it’s perfectly capable as a backup tripod.

Stiff Head / Great Customer Service

Revalli AVTP Tripod

by Joseph M. Macneil Jr. from chelmsford MA on 2010-02-18
I have an older Hitachi C-1 Camera that I have used with this tripod and it works perfectly. The camera weighs about 20lbs all accessories added on and it handles the weight well. The only thing that I would like to see improved on this model is that the handles are kind of short for the type of camera that I mount on this tripod. Slightly longer handles would make it easier to position my zoom and focus controls for easier control of the camera. The handles that come with this tripod work fine for what they are considering the price of this tripod.
If Ravelli offered longer handles for this model that would be great as I would buy them! Overall I am very happy with this tripod and plan to buy another at some point. You won’t find a more sturdy tripod for the money!!

Great item, handy, as described. Relieve wrist stress

by Art P from KY, USA on 2010-09-06
A great item that relieves stress on hand or wrist muscles. I just wish it can be used at the same time with the strap that comes with the camera (Nikon), because you can only hold the camera body + lens + flash + battery grip for so long before the weight of the entire thing bothers your wrist. Did a wedding two weekends ago and this thing held on for a while, but I had to take it off after about an hour or two.

For best use during long event like a wedding, I would prefer a combination of both wrist use and shoulder / neck strap that comes standard with the camera body. Probably wouldn’t be an issue for a brief 1 hr photo session.

Tried to insert both the neck strap and wrist strap and didn’t work out. So if they develop a newer version that can use both neck and wrist strap, then I’ll get it in a heartbeat.

Overall though, it’s a great item. Fit nicely, secure grip, comfortable even after hand being sweaty, etc. Easy to use, even used it with my Manfrotto pro-tripod and the bottom portion fit nicely and steady. For the price, it’s worth it.

Useful addition to your DSLR

by Colin G. Onita from Memphis, USA on 2010-09-05
This product is well built and it helps with holding a DSLR for long stretches at a time. I found it to be comfortable, and it does take much of the strain off your hand.

Did not fit my hand

by Chris from on 2010-09-03
The product is OK as long as you have small hands. there is also no where to mount the neck strap I would like the option to use both
I will never use it

Secure feel

by W. van Leeuwen from Netherlands on 2010-08-27
This palm strap is exactly what I was looking for. I have a Canon 550D with a 15-85 lens, which feels a bit front-heavy together. Also, walking around with the camera in your hand when your arm is stretched down felt a bit scary with just your finger tops over the camera grip; now it feels secure. The quality is perfect for the money, but the plastic part is a bit crooked. The flap with the logo is actually sewed on, from the pictures I thought it would open with velcrow. Material on the inside is rubbery material. hope it doesn’t get sweaty in warmer countries.
With some fiddling, I managed to put the neck strap back on (only works after you put the palm strap on). I made the neck strap as short as possible for over my shoulder, so the camera can be ‘hidden’ securely between elbow and body. Works even if you have to run a bit.
Tip to make sure straps cannot slip: when putting the strap through the buckle, give the strap half a twist, right in the buckle.

Awesome Camera Grip

by Dave (Toronto) from on 2010-08-17
I got a grip that looks exactly like this one from Ebay so I don’t have the Opteka grip. I just wanted to comment on the functionality.

I have a Canon T2i with no battery grip. I would consider myself to have medium sized hands.

So, I loosened the grip so that it would fit over my knuckles. With my index finger I can take photos and turn the dial no problem. With my thumb, I can turn on the camera no problem. However, I would have to use my left hand to turn the camera off (which isn’t a big deal to me).

I can use my thumb to press any of the other buttons on the back of the camera. I had no problem pressing the play button or the delete button. If you are going to view/delete a lot of photos at once I did find it more comfortable to place my left hand underneath the lens and slide my right hand out of the grip just a bit (my fingers are still wrapped around the front of the camera). This way my right thumb has more room to move around.

There is a spot where you can tie your neck strap to the hand grip (which is located on the bottom of the camera). You could probably take the neck strap and just throw it over your left shoulder. I haven’t done this yet but I think this would be more comfortable than having the camera hang off of your neck.

As for that plastic buckle that the strap wraps around. People have mentioned that it can get in your way. I did find it a nuisance because my hand would rub up against it. So, I just slid the whole strap so that the black buckle would be underneath the leather grip itself. Others have said that they took the strap and had the black buckle to be underneath the camera (one of the user pictures shows this). You can decide for yourself which method you like better.

Overall, I like these kinds of grips. I can still reach everything with my right hand while the leather part is over my knuckle. So, I’m happy with it.

X-grip is an excellent accessory for action video

by James Prine from Ponchatoula, La. (Katrina) on 2010-09-06
I bought the X-Grip for camcorder use. It was shipped fast and arrived in perfect condition. I appreciate the simple, uncluttered, straightforward design which was executed with quality materials. Attaching it to the camcorder is swift and easy, and the X-Grip can even be attached to a tripod or other mount when operating the camcorder. The heavy-duty accessory shoe can be detached. The grip of the unit is heavily padded and comfortable to use. Small built-in ‘loops’ at the top and bottom of the mount can be used to attach additional accessories via zip-ties or other field expedients. The X-Grip is constructed from very heavy duty plastic and is robust enough to withstand many years of service. I heartily recommend this unit to all active videographers who want bang for their bucks.

like many who purchase this, i film skateboarding. i have a nikon d5000. for a dslr, this helps a lot with stabilization because you have to hold a dslr differently than a camcorder. i recommend this if you have one. also id your camera has bad sound quality you should buy an external mic and put it on top.also obviously a good fisheye with a wide angle close to 180 degrees. its very high quality and worth themoney i definately recommend buying it for a dslr

Description

The Ravelli ATD Tripod Dolly is an excellent dolly for use with your professional camera and video tripods, light stands, and background stands.
The most important feature of a good dolly is good wheels. After all, the point of a dolly is to be able to smoothly move your tripod from one place to another. Unlike less expensive models with smaller plastic wheels, our dolly uses large 3″ diameter wheels with all metal ball bearings and a rubber outer surface for an ultra smooth roll.
The Assia ATD also features one step easy locking wheels. Once you get the dolly where you want it, all you have to do is “step” on the locks for one or more of the wheels. Some
competing models including the best names such as Bogen, Manfrotto, Quickset, and Linhof require that you get down on your knees to “screw” a separate rubber stopper down to the floor to hold the dolly in position.
The universal leg locks used will fit nearly any tripod. Many of the tripod dollies offered by the competition including the best names such as Bogen, Manfrotto, Quickset, and Linhof have a fixed attachment point at the end of the dolly legs. Ours has a leg grip which slides along the dolly leg going either closer to the center or out to the end. This allows you to adjust the desired level of “spread” for the tripod you are using.

Features

  • All Metal Ball Bearing Casters with Rubber Wheels for Ultra Smooth Roll
  • One-Step Easy Lock Locking Wheels
  • Universal Fully Adjustable Leg Locks
  • Easy Folding Design with Carrying Handle
  • Heavy Duty Construction for Professional Tripods

Great

Delivered as promised. Worked as stated. Very happy with the fit, style, and sturdiness.
Would recommend this dolly. I use it to add height to my 7′ tripod and 15 pound super giant binoculars.
Rolls around my wooden deck no problem. Performs flawlessly. Folds away nicely and comes with a carry case.

Excellent Contruction for Pro Use

by Klear Image Guy from Roseville, Minnesota United States on 2010-03-20
I originally purchased one of these units for a Sony professional camera and tripod. When I received the first unit and placed my camera and tripod on the dolly I knew it would work for my other units. I purchased another unit for my other camera and tripod. This unit rolls great on tile, linoleum, hardwood and concrete floors and not bad on short length carpet floors. If you are thinking about outdoor use, perhaps a jib would be more suited.

It’s a dolly, but not a great one

by L. valle from Los Angeles, CA on 2010-03-07
I hate cliches, but what’s that old adage that will accurately describe this thing…ah, yes: You get what you pay for.

At $35 (from cowboy studios) I suppose I shouldnt be expecting the smoothest ride but I just couldnt get that many smooth, flowing tracking shots from this thing. It is functional in that you can fit any tripod into it and it will hold your tripod and move…but no matter how steady your tripod legs/head are, the whole roving unit WILL shake. This was the case for my Canon XH A1 prosumer camcorder and my Canon HV40 consumer camcorder. (Although, the HV40 wasnt as bad)
The wheels are stiff and that might sound like a good thing but the extra force you use to get it moving will translate in the shot, making for an awkward, jagged push when you start it moving. Changing directions, starting and stopping just looks like you’re yanking the damn thing just to get it going. To be fair, if you’re super steady and are on a solid, smooth and flat surface you could probably get a smooth tracking shot, but for me, I should’ve spent the extra money to get a better quality dolly.

Great Bag just dont buy it from Canon!

I first purchased this bag from Canon for $150, then looked on Amazon it was $68! Needless to say i sent the bag, an antifog eypiece and a filter back to Canon for a refund. The bag is great, all kinds of pockets, and enough room for 2 bodies and lenses although you would have to store seperately which is no big deal for me. For the price its a high quality bag!

Canon 1eg bag

This bag is great (for almost anyone). If you want a bag to take anywere, this bag is not for you. If you have a few accesories go with something else. The bag is a lot larger than it appears online (for me this was a good thing). If you have a lot to carry then this bag is right for you. The design is great. Its Canon so you know its great quality. Plus its at a great value. Just buy it, you wont regret it.

I fit into it:

Canon t2i body
Canon 50D body
3 lenses with room for 1-2 more
1 flash with room for one more
batteries, memory cars, cords/cables, filters, chargers, cleaning kit adapters

Theres even room on the bottom to slide/attach your tripod

Excellent bag at good price

What can I say, this bag stores my gear and does what I need it to do. I had outgrown the smaller, backpack style bag that Canon makes, so I upgraded to this bag. I am really satisfied with the quality of construction and the layout of the interior.

Bad crank

by kevin canini from on 2010-08-28
The crank handle to raise and lower the unit broke the day I got it. I assume it’s from low quality plastic. The company that sold it to me only handles customer service issues online, and since I sent a message to them about it about three weeks ago, and still have not received correspondence. I fear the company (DB Roth) has poor customer service. I am also afraid they may be stalling until the return policy expires for this unit. I’m sure that usually these products are not bad but this one was a giant flop with very poor customer service. Thumbs down.

Really Good Tripod At This Price

by S. Satarkar from on 2010-08-21
I was a little bit skeptical when I ordered this tripod because I believe quality always comes with a hefty price tag. This tripod has surprised me since day 1 though. This is my first tripod. I looked at lot of expensive ones before deciding on this one thinking that if it turns to be bad, at least I won’t be losing too much money.

I have only had it for about two weeks. But I have not found any issues with this tripod as yet. It was delivered within 2 days of ordering. It arrived in a good condition. It is sturdy and strong enough to support my 5 pound D90 camera. It is not very heavy and so easy to carry around. The only thing I found a bit problematic was when attaching the camera in vertical position, I had to make sure that camera was tightly screwed to the mount; otherwise it kept rotating. Apart from that great tripod at this price. It has collapsible legs, two bubble levels and comes with a carrying case. Will definitely recommend it as a first tripod for beginners.

JUNK

by disapointed buyer from on 2010-07-06
I have been doing photography for 4o years and I purchased this tripod to use with my Nikon D-5000 figuring it would be lighter then the one I already have. I am TOTALY DISAPOINTED in this piece of crap. This tripod does NOT come close to being “heavy duty” or “Professional”, it is so flemsy I refuse to mount my D-5000 on it. The whole thing twist when setup, the head is weak plastic and you can not put a good head on it because its NOT standard. The others who have reviewed this piece of crap must work for the swindlers who sold this, Its not worth $5 MUCH less the $30 it cost me to get it here. STAY AWAY FROM THIS TRIPOD, ITS JUNK!

Simulated Outdoor Surveillance Camera Well Made

by Ronald A. Ross from Los Angeles, CA on 2008-12-22
I purchased 2 of these cameras as a crime deterrent and mounted them about a month ago. The cameras came with mounting hardware for instalation on the outside of a building. The mounting bracket is heavy metal and well made, as is the housing for the camera. We have had 2 heavy storms and no water entered the housing and moisture did not form on the glass. There is only 1 thing that is a little misleading. The fake internal camera looks real on the site photo, but in reality it is a plastic initation. Nobody could tell without walking up close to it though, since the glass front masks it.

Best price for good tripod

by Suraj from on 2010-07-31
This is my first tripod for my Nikon DSLR camera, I never used tripod before but I feel this product can given me what I expect from it, It is very light weighted still robust. It rotates 360D for panoramic views and tiled vertically for up and down view. For beginners this is the best product with given price.

It does the job!
