Soooo disappointed

We just purchased this monitor from Fryes after not being able to secure the Philips Video monitor amazon. I could not be more disappointed. First of all, I was not impressed by the construction after taking it out of the box. It is very bulky and light, feels very cheaply made. Second of all, the moment we turned on the monitor, our Wifi was GONE!! So much for no interference. My husband works with computers and is also just as disappointed. False advertising for sure. Lastly, the VOX settings and automute are inconsistent. I slept in my babies room with the monitor last night just to see how it picks up the sounds, with VOX and without. Neither setting was consistent. I am not the kind of parent that needs to hear my baby breathing through a monitor, but I do like to catch my baby for night feedings before a full-on cry. We will be returning this monitor back to Fryes asap. The pros, although they do not level out the cons for me, are; excellent night vision and lullaby option. I would not suggest this monitor to anyone at all…

Good unit for the price

After looking at several monitors I picked the this one,I’m a grandparent and set for the babies a lot.
This unit gives us very good view and sound when they are napping.
There are a couple of set backs from the monitor I don’t care for and that is that the voice activation is not so you can choose to have it on or voice activated, just the sound activation. This makes us uneasy because we are not sure if it is working properly or not. Sleeping light is normal with babies around, so we like to hear all sounds coming from the sleeping areas. Also it would be nice if the camera could be rotated from the base, we set for our two year old grandson and sometimes he get out of the cameras view. Beside that we really like the monitor and would recommend it. This would also work well with the elderly.

The only issue I have with it is, although they say it is interference free, it seems to interfere with our wireless connection and cell phone. Otherwise, really good – love the lullaby feature. I would not have my baby sleep in his room if not for this monitor.

Got this as a gift at our babyshower and I was excited to use it with our new baby. Unfortunately it did not live up to our expectations. It has constant interference problems with our WiFi!! Because of this we do not have any audio and can not use the Vox feature that turns the monitor ON when the baby cries. The only reason it received any stars is because the remote lullaby feature has proved to be handy and the video quality is decent. I wish that we had registered for a different monitor. We will be trying to return it to the manufacturer.

I bought this only based on reviews. I am happy to say I am NOT disappointed at all. This product has a great image that is very clear. I was concerned at first with the reviews about the inability to pick up ‘low’ sounds coming from your baby. It does take the level of a normal conversation to activate the VOX but to get a descent nights sleep and not be woken by every little sound made by our son, I am fine with it. The set up and mounting is very easy. This product will not disappoint you at all!!!

Works, but feels cheaply made

Defender Color Video Intercom System GK300-7M2 / B002OL2I30

I guess this is a “get what you pay for” situation, since a lot of the other video intercom systems on the market are so much more expensive; presumably, if you really want a video intercom system yourself and don’t want to spend an arm and a leg, this will meet your needs.

However, this system feels cheaply made and I’m not terribly impressed with it. The video is nowhere near as clear and crisp as the advertising photos – the colors are washed out and sepia-toned, and everyone’s eyes look strangely dark and creepy, like Hollywood vampire versions of themselves. The picture is good enough to tell if you recognize the person at the door, but not good enough to describe a stranger to the police.

The video duration is extremely short – about 40 seconds – after which, you have to press the button again; if you’re watching to see what the stranger at the door does (and whether they leave when you won’t answer the door), then you’ll have to keep jabbing the video button over and over. This is problematic, as the buttons are big and cheap – they sort of “pop” up and down when you press them, so if the person at the door is listening for movement, they may hear you pushing the video button over and over. And since you only have about 50 feet of cord to work with, you’ll probably end up mounting the intercom close enough to the door to be heard.

The “talk” button, too, demonstrates a lack of craftsmanship; the button is ’sticky’ and if you press the button at the bottom, then you can speak over the intercom, but if you press down on the top half of the button, the video immediately cuts out – I can only assume that the talk button is shorting the feed in some way.

We were pretty disappointed, overall, with this video intercom. It’s better than nothing, of course, but the advertising photos were much prettier and seemed to indicate a more sophisticated, better made system than what we received.

Bottom Line
This is a decent video doorbell, but a stand-alone video security system in conjunction with a normal buzzer might be more useful for the people looking for this kind of product.

Review
For a product labeled as a “gatekeeper” I would assume this would mean for an entrance gate, but the included cable is only 50 ft, and the system is only good for a 100 ft if you buy a longer cable. Might not be enough to get to a persons gate. What this product is really for is a video camera/doorbell combined into one.

The included chimes are really bad, like seasonal music, and even one with a doorbell sound followed by a kids voice saying hello. I settled on a somewhat traditional doorbell sound, but it still doesn’t sound great, and I wonder why they couldn’t provide a simple “ding-dong” bell sound like most door bells.

The product has a feature to open a lock remotely, and thankfully this lock can be controlled by the video display unit as to not expose the control wires on the outside (it is optional to hook the remote lock to the outside camera, but this would be very unsecure as someone could easily hotwire it).

It does work as advertised though and has decent enough video quality to recognize who you want to answer the door for and who you want to ignore ;)

Like others have mentioned, this product has its downfalls, but for what you pay you’re getting something decent.

Video’s good, alarms/noises are OK(but can get annoying), it was so-so as far as the difficulty of installation, and it works!

You just can’t be too picky about this one or you might as well shell out megabucks.

Simple video intercom system for the budget minded consumer

Given the concerns of crime, I wanted an economical alternative for a video surveillance system. This unit is a good option.

CONSTRUCTION

Constructed of light plastic, I am not sure of its durability in the wet and humid months of Florida weather. The buttons on the video monitor are well marked and large for any user. On the side of the monitor, the user can set the doorbell to various sounds. Doorbell sounds are annoying, at best, and the sound is reminiscent of the old Commodore 64 MIDI songs. Sound quality is good but slightly hollow for conversation. Contrast and brightness can be adjusted.

INSTALLATION

Once you decide where to position the system. Drilling in the holes and attaching the unit takes less than 25 minutes. One of the negatives is trying to make the cable inconspicuous. Affixing the cable along the contour of the door and the floorboard took another 30 to 45 minutes.

QUALITY

For the price, the quality is good but not great. I would have expected more rubberized components to keep the elements from damaging this over time. However, for functionality, this system is very good and more than accomplishes the task.

USE

Replacing the doorbell button with the video monitor was easy after mounting the camera on the wall. However, it is not going to be clear to visitors that the button should be pushed. The “Defender” label is distracting and not aesthetically pleasing. Picture quality is functional and decent for the purposes of identifying the visitors on the monitor. However, there is a noticeable latency for the camera to adjust lighting conditions. The night vision function is decent but the field of view is limited.

One of the most useful functions is the ability to use the View button on the monitor. This allows a quick scan of the entryway by the user inside, to “Check things out”.

OVERALL

Overall, this is good system, especially for the price point. It functions to the specifications but there are two things that I did not like: The sound quality for the replacement doorbell and the lightweight construction.

This system is worthy of consideration and you will have to decide upon the Pros and Cons for yourself, if you want to get this for your home.

Good in theory…

Most homes have at least two doorbells, one for the front door and one for the back. Some homes are more complicated; ours has several additional doorbells, all coming together at a common spot in the kitchen and powered by a transformer in the basement. The promotional materials for this color video intercom system make it clear that you can use your existing doorbell wiring so you can connect everything “within minutes.” That, however, is the last you’ll hear about that as the installation/instruction manual does not include any information as to how to connect the device to your doorbell wiring.

There are two units here: the first is a box with a button, speaker, and a camera. The box is hard-wired to a second unit which serves as a monitor. This second unit has an AC cord which plugs into the wall. These two units must be connected to one another with two wires. Note that the camera unit must be installed at typical doorbell height. The doorbell isn’t lit or labelled, and isn’t the most obvious doorbell button in the world. If you hook up the unit high, noone would ever figure out that it serves as the doorbell. Down at doorbell level, of course, it is going to get wet in the rain and could easily be broken by those who would rather not be observed.

The second unit, with the monitor, can be installed anywhere inside, but realize that if it goes on the wall in place of your current bell, it still needs to be plugged in. I’ve never seen an AC outlet right next to the usual spot for a doorbell. But maybe the typical voltage of a doorbell system will run this entire thing. I don’t know…the manual never explains whether the AC cord is still necessary if you use existing wiring. But if you do use existing wiring, one of these units would potentially replace your front door bell, but then what about the back door? You still need your full original system so that it works. Or perhaps this unit can have the back door wiring attached to it. I don’t know. That’s not mentioned in the manual either. The other problem is that most interior doorbells are up pretty high, too high to easily access for monitor viewing and intercom activation, so you’ll end up needing to do some interior rewiring in any case.

Of course, you can leave your original doorbell system alone and simply install this as an additional unit. In that case, you need to run the wiring from the exterior of your home to wherever you install the monitor box. The units themselves work reasonably well. The doorbell button outside activates electronic chimes in the monitor box – most of the time. You have to press firmly, beyond the “click,” to make the bell function. Loudness is reasonable and adjustable. The video camera functions well as does the IR lighting and the intercom. You can activate the unit manually if the visitor has used your old doorbell, but it activates automatically if the visitor uses the Gatekeeper’s doorbell button.

So ultimately this unit functions as advertised. But the manual leaves a great deal to be desired, particularly if you plan to use your existing wiring for the hookup. I was left with many questions even after accessing the company’s website, which told me nothing more than the manual did. I’d also look for a wireless system where the external unit draws its power from the existing doorbell transformer while wirelessly connecting and transmitting to an interior unit.

Great product for what it is

This little unit pretty much does exactly what it says. You can film without touching/holding the camera, making it easier to zoom, focus, and see where you’re going. You can also “hold” the camera longer without fatigue. The brace is plastic, but feels sturdy enough to take any reasonable abuse. The foam covering looks a bit flimsy (both in terms of eventual decay or coming off), but easy to repair in that event. I bought this for DSLR video. It places the camera in a good position for viewing the screen, but a little two far away for using a LCD lounge/eye piece. After playing around a bit, I found I could reverse the middle bracket piece to position the camera perfectly. A word of perspective: this doesn’t give you the smoothness of a real steadicam rig. It’s attached to your body, so when you breath, it moves.

This thing is awesome. I run two film crews shooting on DSLRs in remote countries with no support with custom rails packages for their accessories, and both kits use this shoulder mount for body stabilization. It’s just so versatile! Yes, it is cheap as hell. You could snap it over your knee. But you know what? If you’re worried, just buy EIGHT of them for the price of half a RedRock or Cavision or whoever-else shoulder mount. I say again: incredible.

This “Toy Like” Camera will dissapoint

The other reviewers have said this camera is great “for the price” but you have to ask the question: “If the product is manufactured so cheaply, it is unusable. Is this really worth purchasing?”

The camera image is “OK” but not that great. The housing looks to be cast aluminum but I would not trust it to be waterproof or weatherproof.

The little mounting plate and adjustable arm are unusable: So cheaply made it is not even installable.

There are two types of infrared cameras, the type that show a pale red glow from the front and the type that do not. This camera does have the red infrared LEDs so that when the camera is on you can see a quite noticeable “red eye” staring at you.

Finally, I will not attack DIGIAIR (The Distributor), or Warehouseseller (The retailer) for offering this sub-par product. That is what they do. I am a little upset at AMAZON. They have some control over how the products are advertised and the claims made by the advertisers. I find the description of this product to be misleading almost to the point of falsehood. “1/3″ SONY CCD IR Color Infrared CCTV Camera” might lead some to believe this is a Sony camera. IT IS NOT! There might be one tiny component inside the camera made under some patent Sony holds but that is as far as it goes. If I were a representative of the real Sony Corporation, I would not appreciate the use of my company name associated with such a product.

Treat this product as a toy. Find something cheaper if you want to play with analog CCD tech. Look elsewhere, nothing to see here.

Nice Camera – Good Quality for Price

Being new to the surveillance scene, I’ve purchased several security cameras to get a feel for the Price vs Performance curve. I am very pleased with the video performance of this camera but cannot yet attest to its longevity. This camera may say Sony but I’ve seen it on other websites, such as chinavasion, and it’s definitely Chinese made. It’s cheaper from chinavasion, not including the huge shipping fee and four week shipping time. I paid $85 with the included 100′ zip-cord cable and power supply and is the best price I’ve found. It arrived promptly and well packaged. The video is much better than the non-IR bullet camera I’ve purchased at $115 and much better than the less expensive models I’ve tried. The only real deficiency of the camera worth mentioning is the poor rectilinearity of the lens, i.e. straight lines appear to be quite curved, especially at 20′ or less. Would have expected a slightly better lens in this regard for the price.

This camera has good night vision from ambient light and the IR is decent to about 60′. The IR’s projection is much like a flashlight’s beam so it doesn’t illuminate the entire field of view as mentioned by another reviewer. However, no camera in this price point will. One interesting thing, the IR LEDs must be near-IR as they do emit a soft red light; so if stealth is the object, this is probably not the night camera you want.
The fov is quite impressive, I have no difficulty getting my entire front yard from the front porch (approx 75′ deep X 150′ wide) with its f 3.6mm lens.

Bottom line is this: for the price the color video is very good in typical night-time household lighting and perfect in daylight. The night vision is acceptable for viewing objects center of view from 60′ or less and seeing objects (only) beyond that or in the periphery using ambient light sources such as street lights, full moon, etc.

Oh yes, I almost forgot… it is pinkish in color, but it is by no means hot pink :)

Great price and camera

At first I was sceptical to buy this camera at first but I read all the reviews and done my research on it and finally came to a conclusion that it’s not bad for the price compared to more expensive ones. It has all the features I need and much more. The price is very good since it is day and night and is weatherproof compared to much more expensive ones. The camera its self is great since it has a long cord it can be placed anywhere without having to buy a longer one. The only thing that I wish was included was a manual on how the wires were connected but after a little playing around I finally got it working. Other than that everything was great. It is a must buy item even though it is a pinkish colour.

Best helmet cam available at the price but size is little bigger

I feel this is best helmet cam with reasonable price (actually it is a good price).
I use 1080 but the resolution seems not clear as other HD camcorder but this is best quality available in Helmet Cam. I think if you want anything better you are looking are over $1000.

The LCD display and remote are excellent features and also it can do time elapsed photo graphy too. Also you can expand battery capacity to 1700mAh which I happend to have it. It has enough room to accomodate the fat battery.

Yes it has fish eye effect in all resolution 720 or 1080. It is because the helmet cams uses wide angle lenses, I prefer wide angle lens because it can capture wide area. As a helmet cam, you can really tell what you are capturing so I rather have wider angle to capture more areas.

The mount options in the package are also well made and useful.

It does not come with CD with editing software. The recommenation is use VLC which is OK with me. VLC works fine

Only a down side is the size. The size is little big as helmet cam but acceptable considering all the advantages it comes with.

It also do not have image stablization so certan footage can give you motion sickness but again I have not seem a helmet cam with image stablization. so this is something you would live with.

So I would say it is best in its class, if size is little smaller and has image it would have been perfect. — I know I am asking too much

good for the price until it burns

I have 2 of this,and a 3rd one that burned,because there was not air conditioner on the event center and it got hot and burned.
buy extra lightbulbs,you are going to need them.Like somebody said,it would be a great light if it had an included fan,but for the price obviously it won’t.
If the places where you are going to film are old with no air conditioning or barely any like in my case here in Idaho,rest assure it won’t last.They can either get hot and don’t turn back on until it gets completely cold or it will start smoking and burn not only the lightbulb but the circuit inside and melt the wires then it becomes useless like it happened to me one time.
I will keep on using them until I find another brand that is better.
