Good 1080P Full HD camera @ small size

I have other 1080p cameras. But ContourHD is perfect size for outdoor activity shooting. I bought the camera in order to record Grand Slalom ski races of my son (on his helmet). But I found it very convenient. I also use it by myself for outdoor activities.

How to tell genuine from aftermarket – good from bad

I own 2 genuine vholdr batteries now for my 1080HD system. People are having problems with poor quality aftermarket batteries. The genuine vholdr runs for a tad over 3 hours – enough to fill the 16GB disk easily with room to spare.

As with any new battery, you should charge it and drain it 3 times to “wake it up” upon receipt. This, and keeping it in a charged state, will prevent premature failure.

Now to tell if you bought a genuine product – the packaging is very distinct – clear plastic box folded from thin sheet plastic and meant to be hung on a rack. The box is much larger than the battery, and includes a small instruction card. Finally, both the box and battery carry the VholdR logo. Any other cheap packaging indicates a cheap battery. I bought mine from amazon and got the real thing which works fine with their system.

Technical specs: 1050 mAH Li-Ion, with 3 terminal sensor for charging properly.

Finally I don’t want to stereotype that all non-OEM accessories are sub-par but as far as batteries go for cellphones, I have a motorola that will run 4-5 days while so called “super-aftermarket” batteries can barely keep it alive 30 hours without any use. Given these are the same size batteries I’d expect the real product to be essential here. I have designed products with Li-Ion batteries and met with the companies in China who make them – they are not ashamed to inform you that statistically one in 100,000 cells will fail explosively. That’s 10 parts per million fail rate. But put 10 cells in a laptop and now it’s a 100 part per million fail rate on laptop batteries since they have so many cells. So far this li-ion problem has only been improved, not eliminated, so stick with products designed for your system. As for other batteries, my GM car has an interstate battery that I replaced, and my honda has the factory battery which lasted 6 years.

Bait and Switch???

I recently ordered the VholdR 2350 CountourHD Battery as shown on the image as a factory battery only to be shipped a RageCams aftermarket battery?!? Everything in the description showed the factory battery but I did not receive it! The comments on the receipt say “(Not the same one shown).” What kind of shady business practice is this???

Contrary to the other review from Robert Martin, I can attest this is from Vholdr. The case and battery clearly say it is ContourHD, by the company Twenty20, the makers of VHoldr. The 2350 has the exact same charge and capacity as the one that came with the ContourHD (3.7V 1050 mAh). Make sure you buy directly from Amazon and not one of their third party sellers (who could sell knock offs).

If you want to keep all your accessories together, this case is just too small. It’s very well made, but it’s barely big enough for the camera. If space is at an absolute premium, buy it. If you have the room for something else, buy something bigger.

Branded for VholdR CountourHD but not built for it!

This is a fairly generic case that has been branded for the VholdR CountourHD camera but it’s obvious that there was not a lot of time or effort put into the usability of this camera. The only thing custom about the case is the pockets for the microSD cards. Putting the camera in and out of the case is difficult. There is only a netting on either side for the camera and accessories. The case is barely big enough to fit the camera and one small accessory let alone extra batteries, etc.

This case is a total waste of money.

Way too small

The construction on this is solid, but the designer went too far in trying to make this thing compact to the point of almost being useless unless you are simply using this to store the camera in another, larger case that can actually fit an accessory or two. You can fit the camera, an extra battery and some memory in here… but even with just that the thing is bulging out, meaning it doesn’t provide much camera protection at that point, especially against compression or drops… just protection against scratches. You can absolutely forget trying to get any of the mounts, flat surface or helmet, or other accessories in here that anybody who owns this camera knows is a must since the whole point of having a helmet cam is being able to mount it to things. Just going maybe an inch wider and half an inch deeper would have made this thing a lot more useful. I ended up going to my local camera shop to pick up a slightly bigger case for the same money.

Is it just mine?

I purchased this adaptor to use with the ContourHD and the Panavise 809 Camera Window Suction Cup Mount. It mounted fairly easily on to the
base of the camera. When I tried to screw the male end of the panavise mount into it, it wouldn’t take. It just kept spinning around and when
I took a closer look, I noticed there were not really any threads inside the hole of the mount adaptor. The inside of the hole is black plastic,
not silver metal (like the top edge of the hole). I’m stumped! Is this a manufacturing defect? Am I mixed up about what product fits in this thing?
I was so looking forward to using this! I’m bummed I may end up sending it back… Anyone else have this problem?

Best Portable Camcorder

The Contour 1080p HD is probably the best quality video I’ve seen so far. It’s light, strong, has excellent video and sound, plus a ton of different mounting attachments (bought separately). Tested the underwater case down to just 8 ft, worked great. It still was able to pick up sound with the gain only set at half, in the case and underwater. Bump up the gain a little bit to be able to pick up people talking at about 5-10 feet. When mounting to a helmet, it takes a minute to get the adjustment right. With 110 to 135 degree angle of view (depending on the video quality setting), you can pick up quite a bit of your surrounding. At highest bit rate & video quality, you get about 7-8 minutes of record time per Gb. Well worth the price for camera and all attachments!

Better Than I Thought

When I attach this to my windshield it reminds me of the police “dash cams”: sturdy, unobtrusive and ready for anything. I mounted this to the side fairing of my BMW motorcycle and, without a tether, used it for about 400 miles one day with no worries – tight and twisty, all the way up to 100mph. Rather, there were no worries AFTER I parked the bike. During the ride I constantly gave the cam a visual to make sure it was there and at every stop it was mounted as solidly as ever. I think next time a tether (perhaps fishing line?) would be a good idea.

Perfect Motorcycle Mount

This is a very well made windshield mount that also fits on the tank of my motorcycle! The suction cup is extremely strong and even at high speed and with lot’s of vibration, the mount stays perfectly in place. I even tried it on my motorcycle helmet and it works fine!

Only bug, the two screws to fix the camera to the mount adapter will come off if you unscrew them too much… Almost lost one in the gutter! They shouldn’t come off completely but besides that, very well made!

For shots of drivers or out the window this is an easy buy

This will lock your VholdR to either a window or other nonporous surface (outside painted surfaces) – so long as it is not pourous.

The suction cup is about 3″ diameter and easily latches to any smooth surface – from there you can do whatever you want. The grip is amazing.

Also for another camera angle view, you can stick this to the windshield and point your camera at the driver while a second camera points outside.

One disappointment is it lacks a standard tripod screw. This would let you go beyond just the VholdR (which is a great camera) to hold microphones, other cameras (it has the strength), and many more objects securely. Even my digital recorder (Marantz PMD661 Portable SD Recorder has a standard tripod screw holder on the back. It would be wonderful to be able to suction cup mount my audio gear where I can see the VU meters. I deduct one star for missing this simple feature to include (I may drill a hole and put one myself)

This is a very well made windshield mount. Looks like it was made by Panavise.
The camera mounting rail is too narrow for the Contour 1080p.
I had to return it.

I have purchased this windshield mount for my new ContourHD 1080p but head that should hold contourHD camera is to narrow for rails, so camera does not slip in it. I guess I will need need to widen it with some tools somehow….

Just a little pet peeve on this one

VholdR advertised their adhesive as being reusable. Its not. My pilot put a vholdr HD camera on his helmet with their flat surface mount (a challenge becaue the helmet has no flat surface) but we got it on there. It held for 1 week of flying but when the time came to remove the reusable mount, the foam core tore apart and the adhesive stayed stuck to the base and to the helmet.

I bought these to re-use the holder. $2.50 each is pretty steep since their reuable adhesive isn’t and they know it – they should give you 5 for 5 bucks – I’d be alot happier at that price point.

Note there are 2 diameters – these are the larger of the 2 (one size, 2 ea of the same size). I think the other size is for their original camera, not the HD version.

Mounting option for everything

This kit is all inclusive. Handlebar, windshield, vented helmet, goggle, universal and tripod mounts. Just as the seller states, the charging kit is NOT from VholdR, but it works perfect. I have no complaints about this kit, and will probably use every bit of it for various activities.

The battery doesn’t sit in place very well, so as long as you have it plugged in and set somewhere out of the way (which never really describes any area near my computer, but maybe I’m a slob) it’s fine. It really should sit in better. It gets the job done but when the manufacturer puts such little thought into design for the charger I start wondering how well designed the actual camera is.
